Chapel Hill Community,
Before diving into this community update, I want to take a moment to recognize Veterans Day and express our gratitude to all veterans for their service in protecting our country and upholding the democratic values we cherish.
With Election Day behind us, Council is wrapping up our fall work as we prepare to welcome a new Town Council. Today, I want to share a few quick updates.
First: Congratulations to our newly elected and re-elected leaders on the Town Council and CHCCS School Board. Our new Council — incumbents Camille Berry and Paris Miller-Foushee along with newcomers Wes McMahon and Louie Rivers — will be sworn in on Wednesday, December 3, at Town Hall. I look forward to working with them to keep making progress for Chapel Hill.
Second: Thank you to everyone helping neighbors impacted by the suspension of SNAP benefits, rising costs, and other challenges. Special thanks to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina for supporting our community partners, including Chapel Hill’s biweekly food distribution at the Eubanks Road Park & Ride. As a reminder to anyone who needs assistance – please reach out. And, to those who are able to help: please continue supporting local organizations with your time or donations.
Third: Please stay engaged in Town decisions. The work we do shapes Chapel Hill’s future, and we want to hear from you. Key topics this month include:
-
Nov. 12: Council will consider replacing the current public petition process with a new way for community members to bring ideas and requests to the Town.
-
Nov. 19: We will consider updates to land use rules to streamline certain approvals and support more “gentle density” housing.
-
Nov. 20: Staff will hold a Parks & Recreation Listening Session on the town-wide Master Plan.
Information about the November 12th council meeting can be accessed online here.
Finally, you are cordially invited to join our Guardians of the Hill for a Community Open House at their new headquarters (7300 Millhouse Road, Suite 150) this Thursday, 2–4 p.m. They’re excited to welcome everyone and show the new space.
With gratitude and warm regards,
Mayor Jess
