Update (11:00 pm): Chapel Hill Police have arrested and charged a suspect in connection with the shooting that took place earlier this evening near the intersection of Franklin and Graham Streets.
Geary Wayne Council, 74, of Chapel Hill is charged with the following:
- Attempted murder
- Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill
- Damage to property
- Discharging firearm in the city
- Going armed to the terror of the public
Council is being held without bond at the Orange County Detention Center and is expected to make his first appearance in court tomorrow at 10:00 am.
“I want to thank our officers and investigators for their quick response to this incident," said Police Chief Celisa Lehew. "We will continue to investigate and provide support to the victim and all who were impacted.”

Update (8:15 pm): Chapel Hill Police are continuing to investigate a shooting that took place earlier this evening near the intersection of Franklin and Graham Streets. The suspect is in custody, and the victim is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Initial investigation indicates that this was an isolated incident and there are no ongoing threats to public safety.
Previously released (6:54 pm) At 6:14 pm, the Chapel Hill Police Department responded to a report of a shooting near the intersection of Franklin and Graham Streets. Officers discovered a person with gunshot wounds. They were transported to UNC Hospitals.
Investigators have a suspect in custody. No additional information is available at this time.
