Trail Repairs Begin Next Week |
|
During the next several weeks, Town of Chapel Hill Public Works and Parks Maintenance staff are taking the first steps to repair and reopen greenways damaged during Chantal.
Staff will start on the Bolin Creek Trail west of Umstead Drive to Umstead Park, then from Umstead Drive east toward the Community Center – reopening the trail one section at a time. We expect this work to last three weeks – weather permitting.
“Folks will notice barricades blocking the areas where we are actively working,” said Lance Norris, Director of Public Works. “It’s critical for their safety – and the safety of our staff – that they stay out of closed areas while this work is happening.”
Part of this initial repair work will be to temporarily narrow the width of the trail where the damage is most extensive – between Umstead Drive and Bolinwood Drive. This will allow folks to use this part of the trail while the longer-term repair and/or restoration work can be designed and constructed.
After staff complete their work on the Bolin Creek Trail, they are scheduled to begin temporary repairs to the Fordham side path and pedestrian bridge between Cleland Drive and Ridgefield Road. We expect this work to last two weeks – weather permitting.
The Town is now including long-term repairs in its existing, upcoming project to extend the side path to Willow Drive. The project is in the design phase, and we expect construction to begin in summer 2026.
We expect to begin repair work after completing the temporary repairs on the Fordham side path. We expect this work to last two weeks – weather permitting.
“We know our greenways are the only way for walkers, bikers, and rollers to travel well away from cars,” said Atuya Cornwell, Director of Parks and Recreation. “We’re eager to reopen these trails and we’re grateful for the patience our community has shown.”
