Chapel Hill Transit Recognized for Safety Record
This week, the North Carolina Public Transportation Association awarded our Transit team the 2025 State Safety Award for Urban Fixed Route Systems. This award represents our commitment to safety and professionalism, and the hard work of our operators, supervisors, training, team, safety team, and maintenance team. Congratulations!

Congrats, Peoples Academy Attendees!
This week, we hosted the Spring Peoples Academy at St. Thomas More with English and Spanish interpretation. Residents got to interact with staff at a tabling event before the session, then learned about our government, current projects, and how to get involved. One participant wrote that what they liked most was "the dedication of staff to explain and orient us about things that we don't know." Thank you to all who attended!

May the 4th be with you! Grab your lightsabers and join us for a free screening of Star Wars: A New Hope on May 4 at 7:30 p.m. on the Carolina Square lawn. We'll have movie-themed activities prior to the screening. Costumes encouraged!

Students all over the country will be biking and rolling to school on Wednesday, May 7, as part of Bike & Roll to School day. It's a day to celebrate better health, better air quality, and more! Whether your school is hosting an official Bike & Roll event or not, you can hop on a bike and do your part for yourself, the environment, and the community!

Bike Month is the perfect time to check out Chapel Hill’s E-bike Lending Library! Chapel Hill residents aged 18 and older eligible to register and reserve a bike for free.

"the poet is a verb" Event on May 8
We're closing out Poetry Month with our Chapel Hill Poet Laureate, Donovan Livingston. He invites you to the third annual installment of "the poet is a verb" on Thursday, May 8, at the library, where we'll have a showcase of Triangle-area poets followed by an open mic.This free event starts at 6:30 p.m. and is open to all ages.

Grab Coffee with a Cop on May 9
The Chapel Hill Police Department invites you to Coffee with a Cop on Friday, May 9, at Starbucks at 1800 E. Franklin St. Our Guardians will be there from 8:30 to 10: a.m. with coffee. The mission of Coffee with a Cop is to break down barriers between police officers and the community they serve.

Here are tips from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to prepare before hurricane season:
- Develop an evacuation plan
- Assemble disaster supplies: food, water, batteries, charger, radio, cash

What's the Latest with Affordable Housing & Community Connections?

Last week we celebrated National Community Development Week. In the last 20 years, over 8,000 households have benefitted from Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding in the Town of Chapel Hill

Council approved $1.3M to support 57 affordable housing units. This funding will support a DHIC project for seniors (Maddry Meadows) and an EmPOWERment, Inc. project for renovations in the Creekside Trail community.

Council approved 53-unit Affordable Housing Community on Homestead Road. DHIC's proposal includes 53 affordable apartments for households ages 55 and older earning less than 60 percent of the Area Media Income (AMI).
