Update (1/29/2025): Two juveniles, ages 15 and 14, are in custody in Durham and each face the following charges in this investigation:
- Attempted First Degree Murder
- Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill
- Assault with a Firearm on a Law Enforcement Officer
- Possession of Stolen Firearm
- Possession of Stolen Motor Vehicle
- Possession of a Firearm by a Minor
- Assault by Pointing a Gun
- Discharge a Firearm into a Patrol Vehicle
- Discharge Firearm in City Limits
- Resist, Delay, Obstruct
- Four (4) counts of Damage to Personal Property
Investigators are working to identify a third suspect who ran from the scene Saturday.
The Chapel Hill Police Department is grateful for the support of many partner agencies who assisted with the investigation and the apprehension of the suspects. These agencies include the Durham Police Department, the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, the Raleigh Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Previously released (1/25/2025 10:25am): The Chapel Hill Police Department is working to identify suspects who shot at a North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) trooper from a stolen vehicle around 2:30 this morning. The trooper, who was not injured, was pursuing the driver of the vehicle at the time of the gunfire.
A preliminary Chapel Hill police investigation determined three suspects got out of the vehicle in the area of Timber Hollow Court and Mendel Drive and ran away from the scene. Investigators determined gunfire struck several other vehicles in the area during the incident. There are no reports of injuries.
The investigation is ongoing.
