Chapel Hill Town Council Appoints Mary Jane Nirdlinger as Interim Town Manager |

The Chapel Hill Town Council has appointed Mary Jane Nirdlinger as Interim Town Manager, effective Wednesday January 1, 2025. Nirdlinger has worked for the Town for sixteen years, with the last three years as a Deputy Town Manager.
“I am honored to be able to serve the Town in this new role and through this time of transition. During my tenure with the organization, I’ve seen our excellent team manage many changes and I’m proud to serve alongside them in this interim capacity,” said Nirdlinger.
Nirdlinger began her tenure with the Town of Chapel Hill in 2009 as Assistant Planning Director. Since then, she has served in progressive leadership roles as Director of Policy and Strategic Initiatives, Executive Director of the Office of Planning and Sustainability, Assistant Town Manager, and Deputy Town Manager. She has led numerous Town initiatives, including the Chapel Hill 2020 Comprehensive Plan and implementing the Town’s Plain Language program. Nirdlinger holds a B.A. from American University, a master's degree from the University of Michigan, and a Master of Fine Arts from the Vermont College of Fine Arts.
On November 20th, Town Manager Chris Blue announced his plans to retire in early 2025. Having served in an interim role before his appointment in July 2020, Blue said he knows firsthand what skills are needed for the interim position, “Having worked with Mary Jane for over a decade and having seen her serve in numerous Town leadership roles, I know she has all of skills and abilities to lead the organization through this transition. The Town team is in very good hands with her at the helm.”
The Town Council has selected Developmental Associates to lead the search and recruitment process for a new Town Manager.
