November 28 and 29 are Town Holidays, Some Services are Affected
November 28 and 29 are Town holidays, which means most of our offices will be closed. Here are the highlights for impacted services:
Trash and Recycling
- No impact to residential trash collection.
- No curbside recycling on Thursday, Nov. 28.
Chapel Hill Public Library will be closed both days. Chapel Hill Transit won’t operate on Thursday; they'll operate Sunday service on Friday. All Parks and Recreation facilities will be closed on Thursday. Read more info on facilities that will be open Friday.

Staff Spread Holiday Cheer
Affordable Housing and Community Connections staff partnered with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina to hand out 150 turkeys to public housing residents last week. It was a great opportunity to connect with and appreciate our wonderful residents in time for the Thanksgiving holiday!

Our Fire Marshal and the National Fire Protection Association urge community members to take extra care this Thanksgiving as you prepare for and cook on Thanksgiving. Here are some quick tips:
- Stay in the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop
- Stay home while your turkey cooks, and check it regularly
- Keep a lid handy in case you need to smother a grease fire
- Fire in the oven? Turn off the heat and keep the door closed
- Avoid deep-frying your turkey

Free Residential House Checks
Are you traveling for the holiday and live in Town limits? You can request a house check from the Chapel Hill Police Department while you're away. They'll look for things like damage to property or windows and entries that don't look secure.

Town Manager to Retire Next Year
Chapel Hill Town Manager Chris Blue has announced that he will retire in early 2025, after 27 years of service to the Town of Chapel Hill. “It has been my honor to serve as manager for two years, and I know that the next Town Manager will build upon the excellent work of our Town team," Blue said.

Chapel Hill Receives MEI's Perfect Score
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) shared its 2024 Municipal Equality Index (MEI) scores. For the fourth year in a row, the Town of Chapel Hill scored 100 on the index. A top score reflects the Town’s commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion in its laws, policies, and services – ensuring a welcoming space for all.

Cedar Falls Park Tennis Courts to Temporarily Close
Reconstruction on Cedar Falls Park tennis courts starts on Monday, Dec. 2 to repair weather damage, drainage issues, and the accessibility path. While this work happens, we invite our tennis community to play at Ephesus Park, Phillips Middle School, and Oakwood Park courts. We expect work to finish in June 2025.

Town Staff Meet UNC Peoples Academy Students
Town staff met with students at the UNC Peoples Academy to share how our local government works. As one participant said, this session "allowed students to connect local government roles to the faces of people." Thank you to the staff and students who participated!

Nov. 20 Council Meeting Highlights
Council met for a regular meeting at Chapel Hill Town Hall on Wednesday, November 20 at 6 p.m. At their meeting, they proclaimed November 30 as Small Business Saturday and November 21 as Care to Share Day.

New Art at the Creek
Six local artists are hard at work adding a pop of color to the Bolin Creek Trail greenway. Each concrete pipe between Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd. and the Chapel Hill Community Center has its own unique look and feel. Check them out the next time you walk, run, or bike down the trail.

Start Your Own Book Club
What's better than reading? Reading + food + yapping + friends. Host a book club with help from the library! They have new book club kits with at least 10 copies of the same book, ready for checkout. They have lots of titles available as a kit!

Save the Date: Holiday Parade on Dec. 7
Celebrate the magic of our community this holiday season at the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Community Holiday Parade. The parade starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 7 at 140 West Plaza. It travels along Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, Main Street in Carrboro, and ends at Carrboro Town Hall.

As we work on future plans for the downtown streetscape, we also want to help people navigate downtown. This concept is called "wayfinding." Give us feedback on wayfinding concepts and a temporary sign near 125 E. Rosemary Parking Deck.

Last Chance! Arts and Culture Awards
There's still time! Are you an Orange County nonprofit with a great idea for an arts or cultural project? Apply for funding through the Town's Arts & Culture Award Program. Eligible projects include Chapel Hill-based community events, public art, and art experiences. Awards range from $2,500 to $10,000.

If you drive a 2011-2022 Kia or Hyundai with a turn-key ignition, you might want to swing by the Chapel Hill Police Department to pick up a free steering wheel lock (they're first come, first served). There's been a national trend of vehicle thefts involving these vehicles as well as certain Chrysler Street and Racing Technology (SRT) models. Our Guardians of the Hill remind you not to leave your keys or valuables in your car, and always lock it.
