MEET EMILY
We are excited to introduce the newest member of the Montana Notary & Certifications Team, Emily Krissovich. Emily started with the Secretary of State’s office in the Business Services Division about a year and a half ago and gravitated to the Notary Division because of her previous experience in the banking and finance industry.
Shortly after coming onboard at SOS, Emily volunteered to help at the 2022 Montana Notary Conference, where she had the opportunity to interact with hundreds of notaries and notary experts from around the state and country. Emily said that she is grateful for this opportunity to network and make connections with Montana notaries and the public.
She is an avid sports fan – Dodgers, 49ers, her nephews’ baseball teams, and of course the Bobcats! She has a beautiful furbaby, Yeti, and is honored to serve as the secretary/treasurer of the National Federation of the Blind, Helena Chapter.
As the Notary & Certifications Specialist, Emily’s focus is on providing the outstanding level of support and expertise to Montana notaries that our office is known for, so feel free to reach out to with any questions or concerns you may have. We’re sure you’ll love Emily as much as we do!

ABOUT YOUR SURETY BOND…
Becoming a commissioned notary is an exciting achievement. Don't let a rejected application disqualify you! Together, we will walk through the requirements of the Surety Bond which tends to have the highest rate of error.
As seen on the included sample form, the fields required of the Notary Applicant are few, so take the time to do it correctly.
As a new or renewing applicant, your name should be printed in the first field, as the Principal. It's mandatory that your name is printed exactly as you depict your name on your application. Next to the X in the field below, illustrate how you wish to sign your name as a notary.
The Statement & Oath of Office is only to be performed in the presence of another notary. The notary will witness you sign the second and final Applicant Signature field within this section. Your part is now complete.
The notary that witnessed your signature will complete the remaining fields. It's mandatory that the notary writes your name as you depict on your application.
Congratulations on becoming an active notary serving the state of Montana!

TALK LIKE A NOTARY
Every profession has its own language made up of words, acronyms, and catch phrases that identify an individual with a particular group. Notaries are no different. We frequently use terms that have a specific or precise meaning within our discipline even though they might have a different meaning in common usage. These are called, “terms of art” and the correct use of these terms helps to identify the speaker as a knowledgeable, professional member of that group.
How familiar are you with the following “Notary Terms of Art”:
Of the terms in the list above, can you identify the three that refer to specific notarial acts?
- [Acknowledgment, Certified Copy, Jurat]
What terms refer to identifying a person requesting a notarization?
- [Credential Analysis, Dynamic KBA, Identity Proofing, Satisfactory Evidence]
What terms are related only to online notarizations?
- [Communication Technology, Digital Certificate, RON]
What terms are elements of a notarial certificate?
- [Statement of Particulars, Venue]
Montana Code Annotated, Title 1, Chapter 5, Part 6, statutorily defines 43 words or phrases that pertain specifically to the process, procedures, or performance of notarial acts. Most of them are found in §1-5-602, MCA – Definitions. The remaining terms are defined within the sections that deal with particular elements of notarial practice.
The Montana Notary Public Handbook, pages 56 – 58, provides a handy Glossary of terms that every notary should know, understand, and use appropriately to be recognized as a competent, professional member of the notary community.
Bonus question: What is the correct term for a person who has been granted power of attorney for someone else? Attorney-in-Fact
NEW LOOK AND NEW TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
Have you visited the MT Notary Division’s website recently? We’ve rearranged the furniture, so to speak, to make it easier for you to find what you’re looking for as quickly as possible.
There’s a lot of information available to you and we’ve organized it so you can find what you need in just a couple of clicks.
Are you getting ready to renew your commission or have you moved and need to change your address? The first box (top row on the left) explains the process and links you to the online portal where you will file your information.

Need a Statement of Fact form to make a correction on a motor vehicle title? You can pull one up from the “Notarizing Motor Vehicle Titles” page.
Do you need a new journal or stamp? Check out the Recommended Vendors by clicking on the “Resources, Tools, Supplies, Vendors” box in the middle of the third row.
And that box titled “406 Notary Academy” in the middle of the top row? That’s where you can find all the available training options and the link to the Montana Notary Exam. In addition to some new online courses, such as the Notary Skills Booster, which is a great review of the basics with an emphasis on how to perform notarizations, you will be able to find the dates, times, and locations for live webinars and in-person classes. We’re working with several approved trainers to expand the number of courses available so that you can choose the courses that most closely align with your notary work.
Our next in-person class will be August 17 in Great Falls. There are a few seats are still available, so register now! And check back for more classes to be scheduled for September and October.
