LIVE CLASSES COMING IN NOVEMBER!
You asked for it! Live, in-person notary training is back! The Notary & Certifications Division of the Montana Secretary of State’s office is pleased to announce that two live notary classes will be offered on November 10, 2022, in the Senate Chamber at the Montana State Capitol. Attendees will be seated at the desks Montana’s senators use during the legislative sessions.

The two classes, one for new/aspiring/renewing notaries, and one for experienced or renewing notaries, will fulfill the 4-hour education requirement for obtaining a Montana notary commission. Lori Hamm, Notary Administrator for the Montana Secretary of State’s office and nationally recognized notary educator, will teach both classes.
Registration is now open. The cost is $35 for each session. The morning class, “Starting Your Notary Journey” will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude at noon. This session is designed to emphasize the fundamentals and practical requirements for those who want to become a notary or need to renew their commission.
The afternoon session, “Your Ticket to Ride,” which runs from 1 – 5 p.m., will cover the basic notary laws, rules and ethics. It will also explore the more advanced and complex issues that notaries face, including preventing elder financial abuse, handling unusual or special requests, and online and electronic notarization.
Each session fulfills the 4-hour training requirement for new or renewing notary applicants.
The theme of this event, “Moving Down the Track” builds on the success of the 406 Notary Conference held this past May, where over 300 notaries took advantage of almost 60 hours of notary education. The topics ranged from fundamental notary laws and rules to starting and building a notary business and embracing online notarization. If you weren’t able to attend the Conference, this is your chance to “Get Back On Track”!
Since the sessions will be held in the Senate Chambers, seating is strictly limited to 50 attendees per session. Register for the morning session at “Starting Your Notary Journey”. Attendees for the afternoon session register at “Your Ticket to Ride”.

CELEBRATING NOTARIES – MONTANA NOTARY WEEK
The Secretary of State’s office is proud to celebrate Montana Notaries, identifying November 7 – 12 as “Montana Notary Week” to recognize and celebrate the important service that notaries provide to the people of Montana. There are over 14,000 men and women who currently provide notarial services to the millions of people who live, work, and visit the Treasure State. Secretary Christi Jacobsen acknowledged the critical impact that notaries public have on national and international businesses and society in general.
The week kicks off on Monday, November 7, “National Notary Day,” which was first observed in 1975. That day was chosen specifically in recognition of Thomas Fugill, the first notary public in the New World, appointed by the colony of New Haven on November 7, 1639. On Thursday, November 10, the Notary & Certifications Division is hosting live notary training classes in the Senate Chamber of the State Capitol. Watch for announcements, features, and prizes on Facebook, Instagram, and other media outlets.
Montana has become a national and international leader in the adoption and implementation of technology in the performance of notarial acts. In 2015, Montana was the second state to adopt remote online notarization. In 2019, the Montana legislature revised Montana’s notary laws to bring them to the forefront in both traditional and technology-based notarizations. Since then, several states have adopted many of the forward-looking elements of Montana’s code. Over 160 Montana notaries have qualified to offer online and/or electronic notary services. At its 2022 Conference, the National Notary Association highlighted Montana’s innovation and commitment to education of notaries public.
“I am so proud of the work Montana notaries do in serving their fellow Montanans. It’s been amazing to see how they have stepped up and met the challenges of the past couple of years. We are delighted to be able to spotlight their contributions to the businesses and people of this state during Montana Notary Week,” noted Secretary of State Jacobsen.
