Webinar: Examining Driver Takeover Decisions and Trust of Automated Vehicles (AVs) at Rural Intersections Date: February 24, 2026 Time: 11:00 am to 12:00 pm MT/1:00 pm to 2:00 pm ET Cost: Free Continuing Education Credits: Unknown Organization: Center for Connected and Automated Vehicles (CCAT)
Join the first CCAT Research Review of 2026, where Nichole Morris and Katelyn Schwieters will update their recently completed project.
This work explored whether the complexity of different rural intersections influenced driver trust and comfort in a conditionally automated vehicle (i.e., level 3 SAE) navigating the intersection for them. In an online survey platform (UMN Qualtrics), 271 participants watched five brief curated videos of a simulated automated vehicle navigating different rural intersections, with or without the presence of traffic, made a decision about whether they would like to take over control, and rated their trust and comfort with the automated vehicle navigating each intersection. Intersection type was not predictive of AV trust and comfort with navigating the different intersections, however, drivers’ takeover decisions, level of education, past experience driving on J-turn intersections, and urbanicity predicted the level of trust and comfort with the automated vehicle. The outcome of this work led to the development of a repository of curated simulated videos that were made publicly available for future research projects.

Webinar: Blowing Snow Mitigation Strategies, Prioritization, and Implementation Date: February 25, 2026 Time: 11:00 am to 12:30 pm MT/1:00 pm to 2:30 pm ET Cost: Free Continuing Education Credits: 0.15 CEUs Organization: National Center for Rural Road Safety
Blowing and drifting snow on roadways presents safety challenges by both reducing visibility and impairing the roadway, over large swaths and at specific locations. Because of this, addressing blowing and drifting snow can be challenging and require diligence by agencies. Snow fences have been shown to be a cost effective strategy that can help mitigate blowing snow challenges that can result in road closure, which in rural areas can often cause loss of access to critical services. One interviewee noted, “Putting up a snow fence on a secondary route is like having an extra plow to do work.” In this webinar, you will learn about South Dakota Department of Transportation’s (SDDOT) recent research project to identify blowing snow mitigation strategies, identification of critical locations, prioritization of these locations, and implementation guidance. The results of this research project, transferable to other rural, winter states, will be discussed including:
- The motivation for South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) to undertake a project to mitigate crashes in rural areas due to blowing snow.
- The needs, barriers, and innovative practices of “boots on the ground” staff in South Dakota.
- An overview of the research project and methodology.
- Detailed discussion of the guidance including a lifecycle cost framework developed.
- How SDDOT will be using the framework to implement this countermeasure in the future.

The study investigates how current road test scoring captures, or fails to capture, key behavioral indicators linked to crash risk. Presenters will discuss the implications of these findings for improving driver assessment practices and share insights relevant to policymakers, state officials, and traffic safety researchers.

Right turn on red (RTOR) has been widely promoted as an energy-saving measure since the 1970s, but recent research calls this justification into question. Analysis by San Diego State University's Dr. Bruce Appleyard and Cal Poly's Dr. Anurag Pande shows that RTOR movements increase safety risks for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers, while providing only marginal air quality benefits.
