Webinar: Accessibility - How Transportation Trails Improve Community Access Date: October 16, 2025 Time: 8:30 am to 10:00 am MT/10:30 am to 12:00 pm ET Cost: Free Continuing Education Credits: 1.5 AICP CM credits Organization: Maryland Department of Transportation
Released in September, the Maryland State Transportation Trails Strategic Plan (the Plan) established a vision for "a safe and accessible transportation trail network that connects Marylanders to opportunities across their communities, towns, and the state." The Plan built on the success and foundation of the 2009 Trails Plan and the 2050 Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan (2050 BPMP). The planning process included working with nearly 100 experts from across the state. At this Walkinar, Robert Searns, author of Beyond Greenways: The Next Step for City Trails and Walking Routes, will discuss the tools needed to develop successful and affordable plans for creating more infrastructure that can serve a diverse array of people. With the goal of making every doorstep a trailhead, he will also examine what motivates walking and how to get more folks to routinely engage. Robert along with MDOT panelists will explore railbanking, transportation trails, and improving access to community destinations for people walking, biking, and rolling.

Webinar: Infrastructure Readiness for Automated Vehicles - Guidelines and Case Study Insights Date: October 21, 2025 Time: 10:30 am to 12:00 pm MT/12:30 pm to 2:00 pm ET Cost: Free Continuing Education Credits: 1.5 PDH credits Organization: National Operations Center of Excellence (NOCoE)
The adoption of Automated Vehicle (AV) technologies is expected to impact the transportation industry by offering new strategies to overcome safety, mobility, and climate resiliency challenges. However, their successful deployment hinges on infrastructure that can meet the requirements of AV systems operating in diverse conditions—what’s known as their Operational Design Domain (ODD). Join us for this NOCoE-hosted webinar highlighting early findings from the NCHRP 20-102(24) project, Infrastructure Modifications to Improve the Operational Conditions of Automated Vehicles.
Presenters will introduce the project-developed AV Infrastructure Guidelines, which offer practical recommendations for infrastructure owner-operators (IOOs) seeking to prepare their transportation networks for AV deployment. The guidance covers key focus areas such as pavement markings, roadway surfaces, signage, signals, work zones, geometric design, policy, and digital infrastructure.
The session will also feature preliminary findings from field and driving simulator-based case studies conducted by the University of Cincinnati, which evaluate how AV technology responds to today’s infrastructure and how modifications to infrastructure influence human perception of AV technologies.
These insights are helping to refine the guidelines to ensure they are actionable and grounded in real-world performance. Attendees will preview the forthcoming TRB WebResource and have the opportunity to provide input prior to its final publication.

Webinar: The Realities of Roadkill - Challenges and Opportunities for Wildlife Transportation Mitigation Date: October 24, 2025 Time: 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm MT/2:00 pm to 3:00 pm ET Cost: Free Continuing Education Credits: 1 PDH credit, 1 AICP CM credit Organization: Transportation Research and Education Center (TREC)
Transportation infrastructure is critical for our communities and economies, but the roadways we depend on for travel have significant negative impacts on wildlife populations. Roadkill is the most visible consequence, with tens of millions of animals injured or killed on Oregon’s roadways each year. Beyond direct mortality, transportation corridors fragment habitat and can alter wildlife behavior, creating barriers that disrupt wildlife movement and access to critical resources, contributing to population declines.
Despite these challenges, opportunities exist for mitigation, including the use of wildlife crossing structures, autonomous animal detection systems, and smarter project siting. This talk will explore the multifaceted challenges transportation infrastructure poses to wildlife populations and highlight successful mitigation strategies. By better integrating ecological principles into transportation planning, we can develop infrastructure that supports both human mobility and wildlife conservation goals.
