Webinar: Short-Term Traffic Prediction for Proactive Transportation Management

This webinar will discuss upcoming research findings and publications on STP, plus lessons learned from early adopters.

The search for traffic congestion solutions continues to evolve with advances in technology and a better understanding of traveler behavior. Consequently, transportation agencies are evolving towards a proactive management approach that is capable of delaying or eliminating traffic flow breakdowns.

A key aspect of proactive management is short-term prediction of traffic conditions. Short-term prediction (STP) is a real-time prediction capability that uses both historical and current data to forecast future traffic conditions for a pre-defined prediction time horizon in the near-term (e.g., the next 10, 20, 40, 60 minutes).

The ability to conduct STP is essential for moving up the Active Transportation and Demand Management (ATDM) continuum to a state of truly proactive management. STP also enhances integrated management as agencies have enough time to share information and take coordinated, proactive actions. Webinar: Resources and Tools for Pedestrian Safety

In this webinar Dr. Kari Finley will present the results and developed tools from a recently completed project focused on pedestrian safety. While pedestrian safety is found in many Strategic Highway Safety Plans across the country, there may be potentially competing values and beliefs that influence the deployment of effective pedestrian safety strategies. Understanding shared values and beliefs among transportation stakeholders about pedestrian safety is critical to growing a positive traffic safety culture, implementing effective strategies to improve pedestrian safety, and ultimately achieving our nation’s goal of zero deaths on our roadways.

This project sought to improve pedestrian safety by developing resources to assess and grow beliefs among transportation stakeholders to support the deployment of effective pedestrian safety strategies. This webinar will focus on what we learned from interviews and a survey about stakeholder beliefs about pedestrian safety and their understanding, support for, and engagement in pedestrian safety strategies. We will share resources and tools created to support pedestrian safety efforts such as a resource focused on growing public participation and tools that address growing supportive beliefs to improve pedestrian safety, ways to prioritize pedestrian safety and bolster current approaches, telling your pedestrian safety story, engaging in meaningful conversations about pedestrian safety, and promoting pedestrian safety across the social environment.

This project was funded by Montana Department of Transportation in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration and the Traffic Safety Culture Transportation Pooled Fund.

This webinar will focus on the latest advancements in work zone safety, including the use of emerging data and innovative applications.

Emerging datasets, such as those provided by CVs, crowdsourced data, probe data, and image analytics, have the potential to be effective surrogate measures for safety that can be used more proactively to identify safety issues within a work zone.

This session will highlight three case studies across Arizona, Iowa, and Virginia, showcasing the potential of connected vehicle data and other emerging datasets to enhance work zone safety.

As with any emerging data source, it can be difficult for practitioners to understand how to use the data that align with traditional data collection practices. This webinar will summarize a wide range of use cases evaluated as part of the case studies including monitoring speed limit compliance, enhancement and measures of effectiveness for transportation management plans, distracted driving in work zones and historical safety risks.

Training: Implementing the Safe System Approach

The Implementing the Safe System Approach course is a new certificate-based blending learning course that will provide an in-depth understanding of the Safe System Approach and its application. The Safe System Approach is a holistic and strategic level approach to achieving zero transportation-related severe injuries and fatalities. At its foundation, the Safe System Approach acknowledges that humans make mistakes and are vulnerable to crash impacts. This approach is a change from traditional safety practice and is based on shared responsibility, redundancy, and proactive action across five elements: Safe Road Users, Safe Vehicles, Safe Roads, Safe Speeds, and Post-Crash Care. The intended audience for the course is transportation planners, engineers, safety data analysts, public health professionals, and other key stakeholders with shared responsibility within the Safe System.
