Webinar: Designing Events that Engage Your Community Date: January 23, 2025 Time: 11:00 am to 12:00 pm MT/1:00 pm to 2:00 pm ET Cost: Free Organization: American Trails
Designing events and other types of programming that invite people to visit and spend more time on trails can have a big impact! At Rails to Trails Conservancy, we’re seeing in real time how activities like fun runs, birding walks, guided rides, and volunteer cleanups are transforming trails, building a spirit of welcome and new community participation. That’s because when we get out on the trail, we experience firsthand the joy and impact of this infrastructure—how it shapes our quality of life, powers economic opportunity, and creates a new sense of community pride. When we’re invited to participate on the trail, we learn that it is vital to the wellbeing of the places where we live and play, providing critical transportation access and environmental benefits.
Join Rails to Trails Conservancy to explore the ins and outs of planning events that engage, inspire and activate your community. Brandi Horton, RTC’s vice president of communications, and Suzanne Matyas, RTC’s social media and engagement strategist, will lead the conversation through the lens of Celebrate Trails Day, RTC’s annual springtime celebration of America’s trails hosted on the fourth Saturday of April, and discuss how aligning your events programming with these types of national celebrations and larger movements can help amplify their impact for trails, growing public appreciation and support for this infrastructure at the local, state and federal levels.

Nine Tribal communities across the U.S. use roadside oral fluid testing to screen for drug use among drivers to help limit the necessity for blood draws from Tribal members. Join us for a webinar discussing how and why the Miccosukee Tribe has implemented an oral fluid screening program, and ways that SHSOs can help support impaired driving enforcement programs on Tribal lands in a way that is culturally sensitive and effective.

Webinar: Experiences in the Use of Mini and Modular Roundabouts by Highway Agencies Date: February 6, 2025 Time: 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm MT/2:00 pm to 3:30 pm ET Cost: Free members/$79 non-members Organization: Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE)
While roundabouts continue to be a proven solution for addressing safety and efficiency at intersections in the U.S., the increasing costs of construction and right-of-way have reinvigorated the mini roundabout as a viable option. By definition, a mini roundabout is a type of roundabout in which the central island is fully traversable and intended to be utilized by trucks or other large vehicles. This technique reduces the footprint of the intersection, and mini roundabouts can often be retrofitted within existing intersection footprints. Approximately 300 mini roundabouts have been constructed in the U.S. Like a mini roundabout, a modular roundabout is a specialized roundabout that incorporates prefabricated materials to reduce excavation, paving and drainage, environmental, utility and right-of-way impacts, construction duration, and ultimately, cost. The modular material is typically used for the central island and splitter islands but may also include outside curbing. The material is glued or anchored on top of existing pavement. In addition to these custom-made materials, modular roundabouts employ striping and may include quick-build curbs and flex-posts to delineate vehicle paths. Modular roundabouts are less common in the U.S., but several have been constructed in California, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
NCHRP domestic scan 23-01 was conducted during 2024 to describe the experiences and lessons learned of leading states on mini and modular roundabouts. These experiences and lessons learned may be valuable to others who may be considering using mini and modular roundabouts. The scan team met with seven agencies around the US regarding mini roundabouts and four regarding modular roundabouts. The team gathered useful information on capacity and traffic efficiency, crash histories, design and performance checks, construction costs, installation and construction timelines, maintenance, and public/community acceptance. The scan team found overall that mini and modular roundabouts can be viable options at certain sites when the full-sized options are not feasible. This webinar will convey those findings.

Training: Road Safety Audits - From Concept to Results Date: March 3-13, 2025 Location: Online Organization: International Road Federation (IRF)
Road safety audit and inspections serve the common purpose of identifying risk factors related to road design or traffic control that may lead to crashes, or make crashes more severe. In many cases, they also assist network highway operators and city traffic departments in identifying engineering weaknesses and hazardous locations, even in the absence of robust traffic injury data.
Almost 85% of countries surveyed by the World Health Organization currently report implementing road safety audits or inspections, and it is important for all road safety professionals to understand how to design and implement them correctly for maximum safety benefits.

This approach is a change from traditional safety practice and is based on shared responsibility, redundancy, and proactive action across five elements: Safe Road Users, Safe Vehicles, Safe Roads, Safe Speeds, and Post-Crash Care. The intended audience for the course is transportation planners, engineers, safety data analysts, public health professionals, and other key stakeholders with shared responsibility within the Safe System.
This online blending learning course will consist of pre-recorded modules delivered by subject matter experts and four live instructor-led discussion sessions.
