Webinar: An Overview to FHWA's Separated Bike Lanes on Higher Speed Roadways - A Toolkit and Guide

Most bicyclist deaths occur on arterial roadways, with 65% of bicyclist deaths between 2018-2022 occurring on principal or minor arterial roadways, despite this type of road making up only 10% of the national roadway system. This webinar will give an overview to FHWA’s 2024 Separated Bike lanes on Higher Speed Roads toolkit including policies, processes, and other resources and procedures that can help agencies overcome the obstacles limiting them from implementing separated bicycle lanes where they are needed most, on higher speed roads like arterials.

Webinar: Planning for Walkability is Planning for Health

Learn some of the latest research on how walkability affects health. Join leading health and walkability researcher Dr. Lawrence Frank, Professor at UC San Diego and President of Urban Design 4 Health (UD4H) on the elements of land use and street design that lead to people walking more, and what that means for addressing chronic disease. Dr. Frank will show new results from the application of the National Public Health Assessment Model in a few regions of the nation with both transportation and health based users. He will be joined by planners who have used research on health impacts to influence regional and local transportation planning and within public health. Next steps for these tools and their application will be discussed. Recent advancements have included the incorporation of “complete-street” pedestrian design features captured through AI driven tools using digital images.

Webinar: Safe Access to Services Leads to Safe Streets

The Safe Routes to Services project in Bismarck and Mandan has focused on improving equitable access to essential services such as healthcare, housing, grocery stores and other human services. Through collaboration with community-based organizations, the project has identified key barriers that prevented residents—particularly vulnerable populations like low-income households, seniors, and people with disabilities—from safely walking, biking or using transit to these services. Working together with the Bismarck-Mandan MPO, City of Bismarck, City of Mandan, Burleigh County, Morton County, and NDDOT staff, infrastructure improvements such as filling in sidewalk gaps, enhancing crosswalks, and creating or enhancing bike facilities were reviewed as implementation strategies to address these challenges. By prioritizing accessibility and safety, the project worked to ensure that all residents, regardless of their circumstances, have reliable and equitable access to the services they depend on daily.

Training: Road Safety Audits - From Concept to Results
Date: March 3-13, 2025

Road safety audit and inspections serve the common purpose of identifying risk factors related to road design or traffic control that may lead to crashes, or make crashes more severe. In many cases, they also assist network highway operators and city traffic departments in identifying engineering weaknesses and hazardous locations, even in the absence of robust traffic injury data.

Almost 85% of countries surveyed by the World Health Organization currently report implementing road safety audits or inspections, and it is important for all road safety professionals to understand how to design and implement them correctly for maximum safety benefits.

Training: Implementing the Safe System Approach
Date: April 9 - May 21, 2025

The Implementing the Safe System Approach course is a new certificate-based blending learning course that will provide an in-depth understanding of the Safe System Approach and its application. The Safe System Approach is a holistic and strategic level approach to achieving zero transportation-related severe injuries and fatalities. At its foundation, the Safe System Approach acknowledges that humans make mistakes and are vulnerable to crash impacts. This approach is a change from traditional safety practice and is based on shared responsibility, redundancy, and proactive action across five elements: Safe Road Users, Safe Vehicles, Safe Roads, Safe Speeds, and Post-Crash Care. The intended audience for the course is transportation planners, engineers, safety data analysts, public health professionals, and other key stakeholders with shared responsibility within the Safe System.

This online blending learning course will consist of pre-recorded modules delivered by subject matter experts and four live instructor-led discussion sessions.
