Montana DRIVE summer workshops

blue car

Come to Lewistown this summer for a fun and active behind-the-wheel workshop that improves driver skill and confidence. All drivers are welcome! Operated by the OPI since 1979, our professional driving instructors have trained more than 17,000 drivers in off-road recovery, skid control, and evasive maneuvers. Montana DRIVE summer workshops include two hours of classroom instruction and six hours of driving vehicles on a safe, closed track adjacent to the Lewistown Airport. The one-day workshop is limited to 12 drivers per day. Teachers can earn up to 9 renewal units or one college credit when they stay an extra day to student teach.  School bus drivers can earn 9 training hours toward their professional development requirements. The one-day workshops begin June 5 and end August 12, registration opens February 1, 2023.  Teen Week is July 17-20 and registration for the one-day teen workshops opens March 1, 2023. Visit to view the 2023 workshop calendar and register soon.  For more information, email or call (406) 444-4432.

Montana DRIVE CDL is a new program launching in 2023 to help expedite Montana school districts' need for school bus drivers with a Class B CDL. For more information call Dwight Nelson at 406-422-3944 or Bruce Kubler at 406-369-1391.

Traffic Education program applications due for summer courses

TE01 District Applications must be approved before courses begin. Use the Traffic Education Data & Reporting System (TEDRS) to submit the application. Summer 2023 courses ending before June 30, 2023, are entered in the 2023 school year. Courses ending on or after July 1, 2023, are entered in the 2024 school year. Visit for traffic education program requirements, forms and reports, and traffic education resources for schools and families. For more information, email or call (406) 444-4432.

Traffic Education instructor renewals

If you are a state-approved traffic education teacher and your educator license expires in 2023, your approval to teach traffic education also expires.  And while your educator license needs to be renewed by June 30, 2023, you have until September 30, 2023, to renew your approval to teach traffic education. Teachers who have earned their Traffic Education minor and endorsement only need to submit a TE05 Renewal Application.  Teachers still working toward their endorsement will receive a letter with the number of credits they need to have earned by September 30 and will be given options for earning the required college credit. Visit the Driver Educators page on the OPI website for more information and to submit your renewal application. For assistance, email or call (406) 444-4432.
