BILLINGS – During historic flooding in 2022, sustained high water and destructive wave action on Cooney Reservoir led to severe erosion and washouts at multiple sites within Cooney State Park. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will complete a shoreline restoration project this spring to maintain and protect damaged infrastructure within the park.
Restrictions and closures will be in place at Marshall Cove and Red Lodge campgrounds during the project. FWP anticipates the project will run from April 6 to May 13 but may vary depending on construction timelines. Visitors should expect increased equipment and truck traffic within the park during the project.
The construction project will re-establish and stabilize eroded shoreline at Marshall Cove and Red Lodge campgrounds and along Lake Shore Road near Fisherman’s Point Campground. In Marshall Cove Campground, there will be additional construction to raise the height of the shoreline road and boat ramp.
In Red Lodge Campground, multiple campsites and the day use parking area and shoreline access near the campsites will be closed. Day use near the boat ramp at Red Lodge Campground will remain open. Marshall Cove Campground, including the boat ramp and day use area, will be closed during the project. Users will have opportunity to camp at Cottonwood Campground as needed during construction. Otherwise, the park will remain open to visitors and all use during construction.
