Meet a Montanan

Scott Osterman

Department of Commerce Director Osterman

In our last bulletin, we introduced you to our governor, Greg Gianforte, who brings with him significant business experience.  In this bulletin, we would like to introduce you to another Montanan, who, like the governor, knows what it is like to run a business and make payroll.  We are fortunate to have outstanding leadership that can directly relate to the needs of the business community, including small and mid-size enterprises (SMEs).

“Getting our economy going again, getting Montana open for business, and getting Montanans back to work and thriving in good-paying jobs require a strong leader at the Department of Commerce,” Gianforte said in a prepared statement. “With his extensive experience in business development and management, Scott will be an outstanding leader for the department.”

Scott Osterman is a visionary leader with a private sector background of guiding successful strategy and execution to realize growth, develop strong partnerships, and lead companies through transition. Osterman is a north central Montana native whose roots date back to an 1860s miner’s cabin on Helena’s Last Chance Gulch and to an 1880s homestead in the Missouri Breaks. Mostly recently, Osterman served as senior director of business unit operations at Applied Materials in Kalispell. Over the course of his 30-year career, Osterman has served as a senior executive in Fortune 500 companies and venture start-ups in the semiconductor, automobile, and high-tech hardware and software industries. His broad experience in business includes strategic planning, rapid growth initiatives, operations, sales, market development, and turnaround execution. Osterman is a graduate of the University of Montana and continued his graduate studies at Washington State University.

Workforce

Gallatin

Gallatin College – Montana State University was recently recognized by The White House for introducing new workforce training and education programs in the high-demand trades of construction, welding and fabrication, manufacturing, and healthcare.  The program, which is operated through Gallatin College Montana State University, has a goal of enrolling over 450 additional students by 2024.

As an example, the construction trades program includes concrete, framing, electrical, earthwork, equipment maintenance, and HVAC-R, with the aim of meeting new project demands due to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The program will recruit locally affected residents and place students into local jobs once trained, partnering with local industry partners for development, partnerships, and placements. Further, the program will provide training that will allow students to continue working in apprenticeships or provide certificates and degrees in an accelerated approach. The program will also provide evening childcare to students while they attend classes.
