Prospectus and Call for Artists for

Art in the New Benefis Women’s and Children’s Center.

Suspended Art Project

January 22,2020

BACKGROUND: Benefis Health System is building a new approximately 45,000 square foot, 3 story, Women’s and Children’s Outpatient Center. Services offered include:

  • Pediatric therapies, including
  • Occupational
  • Speech
  • Physical therapy
  • Pediatric psychiatry
  • Pediatric neuropsychology
  • Pediatric endocrinology
  • General outpatient pediatrics
  • OB/GYN care
  • Fertility care
  • Maternal-fetal medicine
  • Childbirth education
  • Postpartum lactation support
  • Screening mammography, and more.

The building will be located between 10th and 11th Ave South, and east of 26th Street. The building is intended to start construction in May 2020 and be completed by December 2021. Part of the designed space for the building includes a three-story open monument stair, and another two-story open atrium, where the suspended art will be installed.

INTENT: Benefis Health System is seeking to commission an artistic design, fabrication, and installation of two suspended pieces of art. The main two-story atrium will contain the largest of the two suspended pieces. The smaller Work, envisioned to be 1/3 to ¼ the size of the main sculpture, will be suspended over the stair landing leading up to the pediatric floor, from the first level. Below are “placeholder” examples of the art in the areas that it will be installed.

The inserted images show that the art can be viewed from the main floor by looking up, or at eye level over the frosted glass railing from the second floor (Pediatrics Floor).

The large piece is located in the main atrium space, which sits parallel and is highly visible from 10th Avenue South. It is intended that the Art will have a presence that will be both noticeable during daytime and evening. For this reason, the art in both locations will incorporate lighting. The architect has lighting selected that could be supplemented into the art work, or if the artists incorporates an electric lighting effect into the art, that would be encouraged as well.

The artist is to propose a material for the sculpture. Glass, plastic, or any other light weight material is acceptable. The artist will also need to suggest installation methods for the art, depending on the weight. The art must meet the project goals without disrupting or inconveniencing people using the areas. The art work must be of materials accepted in the Health Care Guidelines for an Outpatient, Business Occupancy.

The art can be kinetic or it can be stationary. There are impacts to the mechanical design if the art is in motion, so that will require coordination with the air distribution for the building.

The overall concept for the building is of a “cascading” effect, as seen by the forms on the exterior that have elegant, cascading curves, and steps, such as water falling. The curving vernacular can also be seen on the interior of the building, in the ceiling and flooring patterns, as well as finish material patterns.

As this center contains Pediatric health care, it is encouraged that the art work find a balance in color and in form that will engage kids but also be pleasant and timeless for the general and Women’s health care in the building as well.

The complete cost budget for the project is $90,000.
