Immigration enforcement in Minneapolis
Federal immigration enforcement activities have increased in Minneapolis and throughout the Twin Cities Metro.
We stand with our immigrant and refugee neighbors and want to reaffirm that the City of Minneapolis does not work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on immigration enforcement operations. We work every day to ensure Minneapolis is a welcoming place for all. This includes providing clear information about rights and resources on how to get help and adhering to our City ordinance against City participation in immigration enforcement activities.
While we cannot prevent ICE from being in Minneapolis, we will do everything in our power to keep our communities safe. The Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) is here to protect everyone, regardless of immigration status. If there is illegal or dangerous conduct, MPD officers may respond if requested. Their role is to assess the situation, de-escalate, and ultimately maintain public safety.
Small business impact
Small businesses and other places of employment may encounter specific enforcement actions to be aware of and prepared for.
I-9 inspections
An I-9 inspection, also called an I-9 audit, is an administrative inspection process conducted by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). During this process, a DHS agent will request specific business records to confirm that the business's employees have appropriate work authorization.
ICE or federal action at the workplace
Immigration officials may come to a business with a warrant to locate or detain specific individuals or search a location.
The National Immigration Law Center (NILC) offers a helpful guide for steps that employers can take if immigration officials come to your workplace.
How to access legal advice
The City of Minneapolis Business Technical Assistance Program (BTAP) refers eligible businesses to free legal advice from attorneys.
