MPD Launches Campaign to Prevent Firearm Theft

The Minneapolis Police Department is urging residents and community members to properly store their guns following a significant increase in firearm thefts. Over the last five years, gun thefts in the city have increased by 56%.

While gun thefts remain a small percentage of overall crimes, they are preventable—and every theft is a chance to reduce potential harm. Areas near downtown bars, hotels, and sporting events have experienced an increase in vehicle-related gun thefts in recent years.

• 2019: 261 guns reported stolen
  • 91 (35%) from vehicles
• 2024: 472 guns reported stolen
  • 246 (52%) from vehicles
• In 2025 (Year to Date): 64% of stolen guns were taken from vehicles

Lock it up: What responsible gun ownership looks like

You have a right to carry a gun, but you also have a duty to secure it. Proper gun storage isn’t just smart, it’s the right thing to do. Every gun owner can do their part to keep them out of the wrong hands.

Safe home gun storage Knowing how to store your gun safely can help prevent accidents, injuries, and theft. When storing a gun at home, always: Keep guns unloaded and locked in a safe, cabinet, or vault Store ammunition separately Use gun or trigger locks Free gun locks are available at the Lake Street Safety Center Watch how to use a gun lock Keep keys or access codes hidden and secure Educate everyone in the home about gun safety. It is illegal to leave a loaded firearm where a child could access it. Safe gun vehicle storage Your car is not a safe. Leave your gun at home. If you must transport a gun, you can only do it if: It is unloaded and secured in a closed case made for guns The case must be fully closed and fastened, with no part of the gun showing It is stored unloaded and locked in the trunk You have a valid permit to carry a firearm Never leave them unattended in a vehicle, even temporarily Keep keys or access codes hidden and secure   Your choices matter. Don't arm a thief.  One unsecured gun can lead to tragedy.

Report stolen guns

If your gun is stolen or goes missing, report it immediately by calling 911. Early reporting can help law enforcement recover the weapon before it is used in a crime.   Safe gun storage saves lives. Let’s protect our families, neighborhoods, and communities — together, we can save lives.
