March 1 marks the first day that two ordinances impacting property owners and renters go into effect. We have resources to:

  • Help you understand your role and responsibilities
  • Easily share required information with renters

Changes to the pre-eviction filing notice for unpaid rent

Before you start the process of evicting a renter for unpaid rent, you will now need to give them 30 days notice. Previously, the notice period was 14 days. The 30-day period begins once this notice is mailed or the day it is hand delivered to the renter.

Renter rights mandatory disclosures

In 2024, the City passed an ordinance that set a new standard for transparency in renting. The ordinance helps new renters learn more about the places they call home and their protections and resources—just in case they need them.

Starting tomorrow, property owners must start sharing new information with renters. Some items should be shared before signing a lease, and others within 90 days after a lease starts. This applies to new leases signed March 1 or after.

Learn more and find resources

On the City website, we share the complete information about what to share. We also give you templates to download that will help you easily follow these new rules.

Important notes about the renter rights mandatory disclosures:

  • Our renter rights mandatory disclosures template includes all the required information for this specific ordinance.
  • If you previously downloaded the template, please visit our website for an updated version. The old document contains a broken link that resulted from changes at the federal level.

Thank you for all you do to support safe and healthy housing for renters across the city!
