The Minneapolis Office of Community Safety (OCS) heard from community members what services they prioritized in the South Minneapolis Community Safety Center. The services are listed below. There were many ideas on how those services could be provided.

OCS opened a series of Requests for Information (RFI’s) to solicit input from social service and other resource providers on how they might operate in the South Minneapolis Community Safety Center when it opens next year at 2633 Minnehaha Avenue. The RFI’s will be open for three weeks starting July 22, 2024, until August 9. 2024. The information gathered will help OCS better understand opportunities for service delivery, space allocation, and potential costs for the center’s design.

After more than 40 engagement opportunities, below are the ten most commonly requested services and resources that could be housed in the center:

  • Addiction services
  • Affordable housing
  • Culturally specific navigators
  • Domestic violence
  • Food insecurity
  • Legal
  • Medical
  • Mental health
  • Unsheltered Homelessness
  • Youth

The RFI’s are only inquiries related to each individual service, but each will help the City advance its goal of building a community safety ecosystem – a collaborative network of organizations, services, and programs working together to address not just crime and safety concerns, but also the root causes of crime and violence. A comprehensive safety ecosystem relies on the coordination of services that are reflective of the community and meet their needs. This would include both internal City departments, community-based organizations, and other community-serving groups. The South Minneapolis Community Safety Center will be the hub where many of these services are co-located.

The RFI’s, which can be found here may result in the release of a Request For Proposal (RFP) in the future. Please share this with any organizations you know who provide the services listed above. Please email OCS at communitysafety@minneapolismn.gov with any questions. For more information about the community safety centers and the community engagement, visit the city community safety center website or follow the OCS Facebook and Instagram pages.
