On Tuesday, July 23 at 1:30 p.m., the City of Minneapolis will hold a public hearing about a proposed ordinance change.

What to know about the Renters' Rights Mandatory Disclosure Ordinance

Before a prospective renter signs a new lease, the property owner will need to disclose:

  • The identity and contact information of the property owner
  • The rental license tier status of the property
  • A list of housing code violations that contributed to the tier status of the property
  • A list of open orders and violation tags affecting the dwelling unit or common areas of the property
  • Other information that the Director of Regulatory Services deems necessary

After a renter signs a new lease, the property owner will need to provide information on renters' rights, including:

  • Rights protected by federal law, state law, and city ordinance
  • Contact information for the Department of Regulatory Services
  • Other information that the Director of Regulatory Services deems necessary

The renter may end the lease with 30 days’ notice if the property owner does not follow these requirements.

These requirements will be added to the existing renter notification requirements.
