The Office of Community Safety (OCS) presented an update to the Minneapolis City Council’s Public Health and Safety committee on June 20, 2024. During the presentation, OCS Director of Community Safety Design & Implementation Amanda Harrington shared initial details about the soon-to-be open temporary Lake Street Community Safety Center.
The Lake Street Safety Center will be located at 2228 East Lake Street. The hours will be Monday, Wednesday, and Friday: 9am – 5pm; and on Tuesday and Thursday: 11am – 7pm. After the City signs its 2-year lease, the owner will hire a construction company to change the space from a dentist office into a safety center. When the center opens in late summer or early fall, the residents and businesses near the E. Lake St. corridor will be able to find the following in the safety center:
- 311 agents
- Crime prevention specialists
- Police
- Community navigators
- Community City Attorney
- LEAD Minneapolis
- Behavioral Crisis Response Team (BCR)
- Lake Street Safety Coordinator
It’s important to note that BCR’s role in the city will not change. They won’t be seeing walk-in clients but will continue to respond to 911 calls. A presence at this site will allow them to stay in South Minneapolis between calls, store needed supplies for vans, and increase collaboration with other safety partners.
The Lake Street Safety Coordinator pilot was funded by City Council in the 2023 budget cycle and will have a presence in the Lake Street Safety Center. The coordinator will help coordinate law enforcement and non-law enforcement services in addition to providing assistance to area residents and businesses.
OCS staff are also working with other potential partners about having a presence at this site as well. Particularly related to community priorities such as drug use and youth services.
