Minimum Wage Increases July 1st in Minneapolis

On July 1, the minimum wage in Minneapolis is going up to $13.50 at small businesses and $15 at large businesses. The City is committed to supporting an economy that includes everyone.

The Minneapolis minimum wage ordinance defines small businesses as 100 or fewer employees and large businesses as more than 100 employees. Tips and gratuities do not count toward payment of a minimum wage.

The City’s Department of Civil Rights oversees enforcement of the municipal minimum wage and wage theft prevention ordinances, and workers are encouraged to report violations online.

Increases in Minneapolis’ minimum wage directly benefit tens of thousands of families and the economy. The ordinance supports the City’s goals of promoting economic inclusion and reducing economic and racial disparities.

For more information about the ordinance, visit the City’s website. For questions call 311 or email minwage@minneapolismn.gov.

First Avenue North between Seventh and Eighth streets now features a commemorative street sign to honor Prince. Crown Our Prince Mural organizers Sharon Smith-Akinsanya and Joan Vorderbruggen partnered on the application process along with the mpls downtown council for the commemorative street name.

The City Council approved adding the commemorative street name of Prince Rogers Nelson Way to the block the First Avenue nightclub is on – a venue that the iconic musician made famous.

A renaming celebration was held June 7, on what would have been Prince’s 64th birthday.

Office of Violence Prevention Director Sasha Cotton Recruited for Leadership Role at John Jay College of Criminal Justice

Sasha Cotton, director of the Office of Violence Prevention, was recently tapped to take on a new role at an internationally recognized leader in violence prevention work. Effective July 15, Cotton will become the deputy director for the National Network for Safe Communities (NNSC) at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

The NNSC provides proven, evidence-based, life-saving violence reduction strategies to dozens of communities across America and beyond. Its work focuses on the safety of the most vulnerable communities in the United States, Sweden, Mexico and Brazil. Cotton has long partnered with the NNSC on Minneapolis Group Violence Intervention work, including Minneapolis having one of six pilot sites for the National Initiative for Building Community Trust and Justice in 2017.

Cotton has been a champion for public safety and violence prevention work throughout her entire career. For the past eight years, Cotton has dedicated her time to strategically growing the City of Minneapolis’ initiatives on violence prevention and safety beyond policing.

Under Cotton’s leadership, the MinneapolUS Strategic Outreach program has reached more and more city residents through the violence interrupters who help stop the spread of community violence and address its root causes. Recognizing the success of this program, the White House Community Violence Intervention Collaborative has partnered with the City and community partners to enhance the interrupter programming. This has been especially impactful for our youth community.

Cotton’s last day with the City will be July 15. The two current Office of Violence Prevention managers, Josh Peterson and Jen White, will continue to lead the work during the transition to help prevent and reduce the impact of violence through community-focused, public health approaches.

11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 15 The program begins at noon. City Hall Rotunda, 350 Fifth St. S.

Immigrant Heritage Month every June celebrates the accomplishments and contributions of immigrants and their families to the history, culture and economy of the United States. This month is an important time to reflect on the past and honor the strength, determination and richness of immigrant communities while recognizing the need for everyone to have access to health care, education and economic security. Read President Biden’s proclamation on National Immigrant Heritage Month.

World Refugee Day every June 20 recognizes the courage and resilience of refugees. Refugees have fled conflict and persecution in their home countries in hopes of finding safety and a better life abroad. World Refugee Day began in 2001 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention on the Status of Refugees. This year’s focus is on the right to seek safety.

The City’s Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs’ goal is to ensure that Minneapolis is a safe and welcoming place for all. Located within the City’s Department of Neighborhood & Community Relations, OIRA advises City leadership on immigration issues and connects residents to community-based and partner resources.

MPRB Proposals Sought for New Concession Operator at Lake Nokomis

Proposals due July 8, 2022; New Concession Operator Expected to Open to the Public in Spring 2023.

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is seeking a highly qualified operator for the Lake Nokomis concession facility. A Request For Proposals (RFP) was issued today, Friday, June 10. Use the link below to view the RFP, which has detailed information on the opportunity, how to apply, and the evaluation and selection process.

Lake Nokomis Concession Operator RFP

Facility Details and History:

The Nokomis Concession facility is located adjacent to Lake Nokomis Main Beach, on the northwest shore of the lake at 4955 Nokomis Parkway West. The building and grounds have undergone several modifications since the first concession stand was built in 1930, with the most recent building remodel in 2013.

Sandcastle has operated the facility since 2013. Its contract expires on December 31, 2022 and the MPRB would like to have a new operator ready to serve the public by April 2023.

Operator Priorities:

Key concepts the MPRB would like to see outlined in proposals are:

  1. Maximizing income to the MPRB
  2. Providing reliable service to the public with extensive hours and minimal closings
  3. A unique venue oriented to the neighborhood and visitor demographics
  4. An environmentally friendly business approach
  5. An expandable business approach to meet the needs of large crowds
  6. An operator with the resources to invest into equipment and facility improvements
  7. A venue that respects and appreciates the unique setting and backdrop of Lake Nokomis
  8. An operator with integrity and commitment to the park system and park patrons
  9. An operator that will provide a service that is efficient, effective, excellent and equitable to park patrons.

Proposals:

Proposals should clearly outline the type of venue, income estimates, payment to the MPRB, investments in equipment and facilities, business plan, terms, operating season and hours, and sample menu pricing. The operator must also include their experience in the restaurant or concession business. Proposals are due Friday, July 8, 2022, 4:00 pm CST.

More information and a proposal template are available in the Lake Nokomis Concession Operator RFP.

Proposal Evaluation:

A committee comprised of MPRB staff, technical experts and key community stakeholders will evaluate all proposals and provide their recommendation on a preferred operator to the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board of Commissioners, which will vote on the final decision.
