Housing Eviction Resources
The state of Minnesota recently enacted a law that creates a timeline for allowing different types of lease terminations and evictions. It also creates some protections against certain types of evictions and requires an advance notice from landlords for nonpayment of rent. The new law protects tenants who have a pending application for emergency rental assistance. Below is a list of resources and information on what to expect from this law.
- This law is carried out in phases:

Important things to know:
- If you are behind on rent, you should immediately apply for rental assistance.
- By applying for the assistance, you are protected from eviction while the application is pending until June 1, 2022, so applying for assistance is imperative.
- Landlords must give tenants 15 days’ notice before an eviction for nonpayment is filed. The notice gives tenants time to apply for rental assistance.
- Some tenants may be subject to lease termination, lease non-renewal, and/or eviction immediately for a few specific reasons, which is covered on the Phase One timeline above. Then, over a series of several key dates on a 105-day timeline, additional types of lease terminations, lease non-renewals, and evictions can be filed.
