ReCAST Invites Community Members to Develop and Create Mural

In alignment with several ReCAST Minneapolis goals, the ReCAST Team invites community members to create and develop a mural depicting the experiences of immigrants and refugees. GoodSpace Murals and Comunidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio (CLUES) will host a series of sessions over the next seven weeks for community members to come together, share their immigration experience and collaborate in the creation of a mural to be displayed in City Hall. Once the mural is installed, GoodSpace Murals will host engagement sessions with City staff to walk them through the mural and analyze the imagery. These sessions will give staff a better idea of how best to serve the immigrant and refugee communities of Minneapolis.

The first three sessions will allow for community to tell their stories in a safe space. These stories will anonymously inform the images painted on the mural. These sessions are on the following dates:

  • Friday, Feb. 9, 2018, 5-7 p.m.
  • Friday, Feb. 16, 2018,  5-7 p.m.
  • Friday, Feb. 23, 2018, 5-7 p.m.

The last four sessions will be working sessions. Community members will be invited back to paint the mural. City staff will also be invited to these sessions to assist in the working sessions as well as build relationships with other participants. Creating these dynamic relationships will allow City employees to gain a deeper understanding of immigrant experiences and allow community members to provide new ideas on how the City employees can interact with members of their community. The last four sessions are on the following dates:

All sessions will be held at the Minneapolis CLUES office at 720 E Lake Street, 55407. Please register for these sessions by calling Carla Kohler at 651-208-9662.

Next Advisory Team Meeting

The next advisory team meeting will be held on Feb. 27, 2018 from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Hosmer Library (347 E 36th St., 55408). This meeting will give participants a chance to discuss the opportunities for the Advisory Team to guide ReCAST's work over the next year. This will include what it means to be involved, participate in leadership and decision-making opportunities, and increase community voice in how the work moves forward.

ReCAST Reports on Quarter One of Year Two

For ReCAST Minneapolis, quarter one was Oct.-Dec. After each quarter, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration requires ReCAST to report on specific data indicators. The four indicators are:

  • The number of people from the mental health workforce trained in mental health-related practices
  • The number of organizations collaborating as a result of the grant
  • The number of people receiving mental health-related services
  • The number of people who have received training in prevention or mental health promotion

The ReCAST Team finished entering their data in the online database and are well on the way to achieving the goals set for each indicator. Thank you to all of our partners in this work for helping ReCAST be successful!

TESTIFY: Americana, Slavery to today

TESTIFY exhibit at Minneapolis Central Library, Jan. 8 - Feb. 6

Football Hall of Famer and former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan Page, along with Diane Sims Page, Executive Director of the Page Education Foundation, will publicly present TESTIDY, a preview of their collection of Americana. The wide-ranging exhibit will feature art and artifacts from pivotal eras in American history while also providing a platform for visitors to share their thoughts, feelings and personal experiences.

The free exhibit is open Jan. 8 - Feb. 6, in Cargill Hall at Minneapolis Central Library.

Inspired by the recent resurgence of racial tension in our country, TESTIFY gives context and definition to the conversation, serving as a reminder of the history that brings us to today.

Several events will be held during the course of the exhibit:

  • Jan. 31, 2-4 p.m. - Pohlad Hall, Minneapolis Central Library
Alan Page will present a talk titled "Testify: It's Not About the Flag or the Anthem, It's About Justice." The address will respond to the controversy surrounding NFL protests and will attempt to shift the focus from whether player protests are appropriate back onto the underlying issue of racial justice.

  • Feb. 1-3, 3-5 p.m. - Pohlad Hall, Minneapolis Central Library
NFL Films chronicles Alan Page's life in "Black Star Risen," a film produced by David Plaut. As a player, Page redefined the defensive tackle position in pro football and made the Hall of Fame - only to leave the game behind for a new career in law and education. Another film, "A Football Life: Alan Page" is a documentary about Page's journey in sports and beyond.

About ReCAST Minneapolis

The Resilience in Communities After Stress & Trauma (ReCAST) Minneapolis Program is funded through a multi-year grant from the Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). ReCAST Minneapolis is intended to assist high-risk youth and families, and promote resilience and equity in communities that have recently faced civil unrest through the implementation of evidence-based violence prevention and community youth engagement programs, as well as linkages to trauma-informed behavioral health services. SAMHSA created the ReCAST Program to support communities that have lived through demonstrations of mass protest in response to police-involved shootings of unarmed African-American males.
