Register Now for ReCAST Minneapolis' Capacity Building Institute

The City of Minneapolis is committed to healing and resilience grounded in evidence of cultural experience and practice. ReCAST Minneapolis is seeking participants to attend trainings available in the Capacity Building Institute. The Capacity Building Institute is a training model that will support ongoing development and engagement for those who live, work, and play in Minneapolis around trauma and resiliency strategies. Trainers will specifically highlight strategies that are relevant to the African American community.

ReCAST Minneapolis invites faith based leaders, community cultural leaders and healers to participate in the Capacity Building Institute for the adult focused track, which will start in January 2018. There is also a youth focused track for youth and people who work with youth and their families. These trainings will take place Tuesday afternoons starting in February.

For more information and to register for trainings, please visit the ReCAST Minneapolis page.

Year One Celebration

Year One Celebration Recap

The ReCAST Minneapolis team hosted a community gathering to celebrate all of the work that was done throughout the first year of the grant. Each team member presented a portion of the work completed in year one ranging from internal staff trainings, Welcoming Week events, and the collaborative response after the dashcam footage from the Philando Castile incident was released. Two program managers, Ebony Adedayo and Desralynn Cole, spoke about the upcoming projects and the way community members can get involved in year two of ReCAST Minneapolis.

ReCAST is now on YouTube!

ReCAST Minneapolis has developed three introduction videos and is in the process of completing three #BLACKJOY videos that focus on trauma specific to the Black and African American community in Minneapolis. These videos are now available on the City of Minneapolis' YouTube page under the ReCAST Minneapolis playlist. Please feel free to share these videos on your social media, with your colleagues and friends, and anyone else who may benefit from viewing them. ReCAST Minneapolis will be creating several more culturally specific videos that will contain ways to address stress and trauma and promote self-care and resilience.

Complete the Resilience Scan Survey

The City of Minneapolis is developing a resilience strategy to better prepare for, withstand and bounce back from today’s biggest challenges such as housing challenges, aging infrastructure, natural disasters, racial inequities and a changing climate. Part of developing the strategy involves understanding the challenges Minneapolis faces, both as shocks and ongoing stresses. Residents are encouraged to weigh in by taking a new survey.

The survey is part of Minneapolis’ resilience scan, the first stage of developing a resilience strategy that also includes community engagement and research. This scan will give staff and community members a better understanding of the City’s current state of resilience. The results of the survey and other research will help frame the focus of the next phase of strategy development, which will happen in 2018.

The survey is available online through Jan. 19, 2018 in four languages.

#WeAreMpls

#WeAreMpls Campaign

The City of Minneapolis has launched a new public awareness campaign called #WeAreMpls elevating unique voices in the city reflective of Minneapolis’ rich diversity.

The campaign is connected to the City’s new membership in Welcoming America’s network of Welcoming Cities and Counties, recognizing its commitment to inclusiveness toward immigrants and all its residents.

The #WeAreMpls campaign features compelling stories and photos of newcomers and long-time residents by Stephanie Glaros, a local photographer behind the popular blog “Humans of Minneapolis.” The photos and stories can be found at minneapolismn.gov/WeAreMpls.

You can share your own story, too, by visiting the website.

The City would love your help in spreading the word about the campaign to people in your neighborhood. You can find a campaign toolkit, including a campaign poster and #WeAreMpls sign, at minneapolismn.gov/WeAreMpls.

The City is also looking for more people to interview for the campaign. Please email Sarah McKenzie with City of Minneapolis Communications at sarah.mckenzie@minneapolismn.gov with recommendations.

About ReCAST Minneapolis

The Resilience in Communities After Stress & Trauma (ReCAST) Minneapolis Program is funded through a multi-year grant from the Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). ReCAST Minneapolis is intended to assist high-risk youth and families, and promote resilience and equity in communities that have recently faced civil unrest through the implementation of evidence-based violence prevention and community youth engagement programs, as well as linkages to trauma-informed behavioral health services. SAMHSA created the ReCAST Program to support communities that have lived through demonstrations of mass protest in response to police-involved shootings of unarmed African-American males.
