Apply by October 20 to Serve on the Food Council

Are you looking for a way to impact local food policy and food systems? Are you a Minneapolis resident? The Homegrown Minneapolis Food Council is seeking members to be a part of this team that proposes and works on innovative solutions to improve the local food system.

The Homegrown Minneapolis Food Council is a City-community partnership and advisory group that works to support all Minneapolis residents and increase access to quality food, address hunger and food insecurity, connect sectors of the food system, influence policy and decision making, and ensure an environmentally sustainable and socially just food system. Fifteen community members will be appointed by the Mayor and City Council. Members serve two-year terms and participate in monthly meetings and work groups.

Join Minneapolis Public Schools as sixteen middle and high schools students team up with local chefs and NFL players for this Super Bowl edition, top-chef style cooking competition! The winning team's recipe will be served out of MPS' food truck during Super Bowl Week!

Dinner on the Farm: Harvest Fundraiser to Support the
Hmong American Farmers Association (HAFA)

This dinner on the farm will include hayrides, walking tours, music, a bonfire and s'mores. The community dinner will be prepared by longtime collaborator, Chef Yia Vang of Union Kitchen, who will be creating special dishes made from produce grown on the HAFA Farm. In the spirit of reducing waste ad being environmentally conscious, guests should plan to bring their own plates and silverware. 

 


Resources

Free Compost for Community Gardens in Minneapolis 
(while supply lasts)

A limited supply of complimentary compost is still available through the City of Minneapolis Community Garden Compost Program. Qualifying community gardens may request one delivery of up to 10 cubic yards of compost. The amount of compost and the number of compost deliveries are limited, and not guaranteed. Compost and compost deliveries are provided on a first-come, first-served basis. However, community gardens that have never received compost, have poor soil quality, or are start-up gardens will get priority. 

Please note that the compost season depends on the weather. Very cold or snowy weather can affect when the season starts or ends.

Community Food Projects Grant RFA

The primary goals of the CFP are to: Meet the food needs of low-income individuals through food distribution, community outreach to assist in participation in Federally assisted nutrition programs, or improving access to food as part of a comprehensive service; Increase the self-reliance of communities in providing for the food needs of the communities; Promote comprehensive responses to local food access, farm, and nutrition issues; and Meet specific state, local or neighborhood food and agricultural needs including needs relating to: Equipment necessary for the efficient operation of a project; Planning for long-term solutions; or The creation of innovative marketing activities that mutually benefit agricultural producers and low-income consumers.

Job Openings with the Coordinator's Office of Sustainability

The City of Minneapolis Coordinator's Office of Sustainability is hiring TWO part-time temporary Sustainability Program Aides to focus on: 

  • local food policy and Homegrown Minneapolis
  • climate change, energy, and other sustainability topics

Sustainability Program Aides will assist with planning, development and implementation of events, activities, policies, research, engagement and communications. The positions are part-time 20-29 hours/week and will last for at least six but no more than 12 months. All candidates should apply for the Sustainability Program Aide position and indicate which position(s) they are interested in. Postings close at 11:59 pm on Tuesday, October 10th.

Job Openings with the Minneapolis Health Department

The Minneapolis Health Department's Healthy Living Initiative works with community partners to create opportunities for everyone to eat healthy, be physically active, and live tobacco free. The Healthy Living team is seeking qualified individuals to fill four positions:

  • Public Health Specialist I - Assist with implementing projects that increase access to safe, affordable, and culturally appropriate physical activity opportunities in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood.
  • Public Health Specialist I - Assist with increasing healthy living opportunities in schools, worksites, and community settings.
  • Public Health Specialist II – Coordinate tobacco prevention and control initiatives including a smoke-free housing campaign, implementation of tobacco point-of-sale policies, and smoking cessation efforts.
  • Public Health Specialist II – Serve as a Healthy Living Community Liaisonidentifying and implementing strategies to increase access to healthy foods, physical activity opportunities and programs/resources to help people prevent and manage diabetes.

MPS RFP for Urban Education Farm Feasibility Study

Target and the Minneapolis Public Schools Culinary & Wellness Services have partnered on developing a Request for Proposal for consulting services to conduct a feasibility study for a Minneapolis Public School Urban Education Farm.  We’re hoping to reach a broad set of potential consultants who would be interested in submitting a proposal to be the lead consultant for this Urban Education Farm feasibility study. 

The RFP will be posted on the Minneapolis Public Schools’ procurement website 

The  intent to submit due on 10/17/17 is a simple process with formal proposals due on 11/14/17
