Team –
I read the passage below on Facebook last week. A friend of mine had posted it, but I’m not sure where it originated. Wherever it came from, it aligned well with the topic I wanted to write about this week.
"You are holding a cup of coffee when someone comes along and bumps into you or shakes your arm, making you spill your coffee everywhere. Why did you spill the coffee? 'Because someone bumped into me!!!' Wrong answer. You spilled the coffee because there was coffee in your cup. Had there been tea in the cup, you would have spilled tea. Whatever is inside the cup is what will spill out. Therefore, when life comes along and shakes you (which WILL happen), whatever is inside you will come out. It's easy to fake it, until you get rattled. So we have to ask ourselves... 'what's in my cup?' When life gets tough, what spills over? Joy, gratitude, peace and humility? Anger, bitterness, victim mentality and quitting-tendencies? Life provides the cup, YOU choose how to fill it. Today let's work towards filling our cups with gratitude, forgiveness, joy, words of affirmation, resilience, positivity; and kindness, gentleness and love for others."
How we react to any given situation shows exactly what’s in our cup. This is true when someone “bumps into us” in life, when we make mistakes, and generally how we show up every day. Are we grouchy about the traffic and the dishes that our significant other left on the counter? Or are we thrilled that the sun came up for us another day, that we’re employed in a job with great people around us, or even genuinely excited about what the day holds for us?
Last week, after making an error, a team member came to me a few hours later and owned the issue. This team member not only apologized for the mistake, but voluntarily discussed how to ensure the mistake would not occur again. Regardless of how I felt after the mistake (let me tell you some frustration spilled out of my cup ☹), the subsequent conversation immediately started repairing the trust factor in the relationship. The team member displayed the gratitude and humility they had already put in their cup. Then, the forgiveness and kindness spilled out of my cup. I wish that had been what was on top.
So this week, let’s be sure to fill our own cups with all of the wonderful things the author mentions above. Give yourself grace and remind yourself that we all make mistakes, even ourselves! That will help us be more compassionate and forgiving when we could feel wronged. Then, we won’t have to eat crow and own the bad stuff that might spill out. The good stuff will already be on top!
Have a great week!

The Results are In!
After everything was weighed, our team collected 258.4 pounds of waste in just one afternoon. In total, 39.4% of the total waste was able to be recycled or composted, beating last year's total of 36.4%!
