DESE Accepting Nominations for Missouri Teacher of the Year
Jefferson City, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is now accepting nominations for Regional Teacher of the Year. This is the first step for an educator to become the 2027 Missouri Teacher of the Year.
The Teacher of the Year program honors exceptional educators who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to students, show innovative teaching methods, and consistently display extraordinary leadership within their school district.
Anyone can nominate an educator for the award, even if they are not a school district’s teacher of the year program winner. Nominations are due by April 14, 2026, and are anonymous unless otherwise requested.
Nominations for Regional Teacher of the Year can be made here.
“Research shows that the most significant impact on the academic performance of a student is the quality of the teacher,” Commissioner of Education Dr. Karla Eslinger said. “Celebrating the excellence of our teachers is essential to boost morale, increase retention, and inspire a culture of continuous professional growth.”
The Regional Teachers of the Year are selected by Regional Selection Committees, made up of educational associations, peers, and administrators. The Committee will select 34 teachers to receive the Regional Teacher of the Year award, representing school districts from every corner of the state. The Regional Teachers of the Year will be announced this summer. Those teachers are then invited to apply to be the Missouri Teacher of the Year which will be announced in September.
“Being named Regional Teacher of the Year was an unexpected and incredible honor. This recognition is a reminder of the value of our work and the purpose all educators share; to serve and uplift young people. I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to represent my community.” said Kim Sixta 2026 Missouri Teacher of the Year.
