Offender Tablets

Offenders are now able to make phone calls using their tablets, which has the potential to be used as a recording device. If an offender places a phone call, then puts his tablet in his pocket or in a case with the earbud/mic plugged in, the tablet can now be used as a recording device. During a phone conversation with a called party, offenders may attempt to invoke staff to say something so the interaction is recorded by the called party. This could potentially be a means of setting up staff by the offenders using their tablets through the called party to record the phone conversation and interactions with staff.

Ways to prevent this from happening:

     1) staff should ensure when speaking with or dealing with an offender that the offender’s earbud/mic is unplugged from the offender’s tablet. If the earbud/mic is unplugged, no call can be heard on either side.

     2) do not assume if a tablet is on the offenders desk, bunk, or in a case that it is not in use. Take steps to check it. Have the offender unplug the earbud/mic.

     3) remain professional when dealing with offenders.
