Majesty of the Osage program planned June 10 at Van Meter State Park

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Learn about the history of the Osage people at a special program June 10 at Van Meter State Park near Miami. The free program will be held at 2 p.m. in Missouri's American Indian Cultural Center in the park and the public is invited

Historian and educator Jim Duncan, past director of the Missouri State Museum in the Missouri State Capitol, will discuss the early migration of the Osage people and how the structure of their clan system reflects their view of the cosmos. From his presentation, learn how these proud, independent people, forced to move from their homeland beginning in the 1820s, have managed to surmount the hardships of forced acculturation to retain their identity.

Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, the program is jointly organized by the Missouri Humanities Council and the State Historical Society of Missouri as part of the Show-Me Missouri speaker’s bureau.

From May through September, Missouri's American Indian Cultural Center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday through Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The center is closed Monday and Tuesday.
