Gov. Nixon congratulates Missouri Insurance Director John Huff on being elected president-elect of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners

Huff to oversee national organization tasked with setting standards and governance for state-based insurance regulation, continue role as Missouri insurance director

Jefferson City, MO - Gov. Jay Nixon today congratulated John M. Huff, Director of the Missouri Department of Insurance, Financial Institutions and Professional Registration, on being elected by his peers to serve as President-Elect of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) on Sunday. He will begin his term as President-Elect immediately, and will continue in his role as director of the Missouri DIFP.

“John has been an integral member of my cabinet since I became Governor six years ago, and is respected both nationally and internationally for his leadership in our system of state-based insurance regulation,” said Gov. Nixon. “From overseeing the insurance industry’s $2 billion response to the Joplin tornado to protecting the stability of our banking system during the financial crisis, John has been an outstanding asset to this state and its citizens.”

The department protects consumers through the regulation of half a million professionals, financial institutions and businesses that impact Missourians’ lives daily.

Throughout his tenure as Director, Huff has served in several leadership roles with the NAIC, including his 2010 appointment to the U.S. Financial Stability Oversight Council. He served two terms on the council and was the first state insurance regulator to be appointed by the NAIC. The council was created by the 2010 Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

The NAIC is the U.S. standard-setting and regulatory support organization created and governed by the chief insurance regulators from the 50 states, the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories. Through the NAIC, state insurance regulators establish standards and best practices, conduct peer review, and coordinate their regulatory oversight. NAIC staff supports these efforts and represents the collective views of state regulators domestically and internationally. The NAIC is based in Kansas City and employs more than 395 employees.

The last Director from Missouri to serve as NAIC President was C. Lawrence Leggett in 1955.
