Updated COVID-19 Vaccine

On September 11, 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the following action:

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration took action approving and authorizing for emergency use updated COVID-19 vaccines formulated to more closely target currently circulating variants and to provide better protection against serious consequences of COVID-19, including hospitalization and death. Today’s actions relate to updated mRNA vaccines for 2023-2024 manufactured by ModernaTX Inc. and Pfizer Inc. Consistent with the totality of the evidence and input from the FDA’s expert advisors, these vaccines have been updated to include a monovalent (single) component that corresponds to the Omicron variant XBB.1.5.  (See FDA announcement at:  https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-takes-action-updated-mrna-covid-19-vaccines-better-protect-against-currently-circulating)

Pursuant to recently revised section 338.010.1(4), pharmacists may administer the updated COVID-19 vaccines referenced above independently or by physician protocol, if authorized by your governing protocol.  Effective August 28, 2023, a physician protocol is optional and is no longer required.   See also emergency rule 20 CSR 2220-6.050 which clarifies pharmacists may administer reformulated or updated versions of vaccines authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after January 1, 2023, provided the initial vaccine was approved by the FDA prior to January 1, 2023.

Pharmacists immunizing under 338.010.1(4) must have a Notification of Intent to immunize on file with the Board and meet the requirements of rule 20 CSR 2220-6.050. Pharmacists immunizing under the PREP Act authority must comply with all requirements of the PREP Act.   (COVID-19 vaccines may also be administered by prescription order pursuant to 20 CSR 2220-6.040).
