Office of Special Education
The Office of Special Education makes sure schools follow the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). IDEA is a law that protects students with disabilities. It helps make sure students receive the services and supports they need at school.
As a parent, you know your child best. The Office of Special Education works with schools and families to support students. Together with the school team, you help create an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) so it meets your child’s needs.
What the Office of Special Education can do:
- Share information and resources to help parents understand special education services

Make sure the IEP is followed, including services like speech therapy, occupational or physical therapy, sign language support, and classroom accommodations
- Support teachers and school staff by offering training and guidance to help students with different learning needs
- Monitor special education programs to be sure schools follow federal and state laws that protect students with disabilities
Pat Fox, Northeast SHCN Family Partner, shared, “It is important to understand your child’s rights and the school policies so you can speak up for what your child needs.” She also suggested writing those items down and keeping records to help ensure your child gets the support they deserve.
