DHSS UPDATES
DHSS reports that a person has been hospitalized in Missouri after contracting a brain-eating amoeba, possibly after water skiing in the Lake of the Ozarks. 8/13/2025 (link)
DHSS announces three funding opportunities under the Missouri Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Grant Program. This program, supported by taxes on non-medical cannabis, aims to increase health outcomes and prevent and reduce the prevalence of SUDs and/or drug-related harms, including overdose. Applications due September 15. (link)
Save the date for DHSS’ Fall Preparedness Summit to be held October 1, 8:30 am – 4:00 pm at Living Hope Church, 3011 S Ten Mile Drive, Jefferson City. The agenda will include sessions on World Cup Preparations, ESRI, AI and a water disruption Tabletop Exercise. Registration details to come. In-person attendance option only.

8/13/2025: (HPV) vaccination has nearly eliminated infection with the high-risk HPV strains 16/18, which cause over 70% of cervical cancer, in Danish women immunized as adolescents, suggests a study published in Eurosurveillance. (link)
8/13/2025: An article in the British Medical Journal says drugs to treat ADHD are linked to a reduced risk of suicidal behavior, substance misuse, and crime. (link)
8/13/2025: Florida becomes first state to ban 7-OH, found in some kratom products, by classifying it as a Schedule I controlled substance. 7-OH acts like an opioid and has been called “legal morphine.” (link)

8/13/2025: Quitting smoking predicts improved recovery from other substance use disorders, according to a large study funded by NIH. (link)
