On February 26, Ranken Technical College in St. Louis hosted approximately 26 young men and women drawn from the St. Louis Public Schools student body to discuss the value of summer jobs. A special panel convened to answer questions and discuss their own summer job experiences. The panel consisted of St. Louis Mayor Francis G. Slay, former Missouri Senator Maida Coleman, Missouri Department of Agriculture Deputy Secretary Darryl Chatman, and SLATE Young Adult Workforce Division Manager Dr. Alice Prince.

And yesterday, the governor was joined by local and state officials, business leaders, and students at the Full Employment Council in Kansas City to further encourage youth to take advantage of the program.

About the Summer Job League

Administered by the Missouri Division of Workforce Development, the Summer Job League is a workforce placement program that helps emerging workers (ages 16-24) in the Greater Kansas City and St. Louis areas earn workplace skill certificates and connect with area businesses. The program allows youth to gain real-world work experience while earning a paycheck, while supporting businesses are able to access high-quality job candidates at NO cost.

To date, more than 1,700 youth have applied for the program, and more than 120 employers have signed up to support the league and offer summer positions.

Organizations such as Magna Seating, thinkBIG, KCP&L, and Research Medical Center are among the employers offering a variety of summer positions that will expose league workers to STEM-related occupations and assignments including web design, patient care, and engineering.
