Missouri among leading states for bioscience
Located right in the
heart of the Kansas
City animal health corridor, as well as home to the world’s largest
concentration of plant scientists in St. Louis, Missouri is a national hub for bioscience. A new
report published by Batelle and BIO (Biotechnology Industry Organization) confirmed
this, highlighting how the state is leading the pack in certain bioscience
concentrations. In addition, the study also found that several Missouri cities
are among the top in the nation for employment in the biosciences.
Some of the findings
include:
• Missouri is the national leader in bioscience as a share of academic
research activity, with 84.5% of all academic research expenditures in the
biosciences.
• Missouri is a
specialized state for the agricultural feedstock and chemicals bioscience
subsector.
• Kansas City, St.
Louis, and St. Joseph all rank among the top metropolitan areas for largest
employment levels in the agricultural feedstock and chemicals subsector.
• St. Louis and Kansas
City are among the top metropolitan areas for largest employment levels in the
research, testing, and medical laboratories subsector.
• Missouri is among the
top 5 states for animal biotech venture capital investments.
• Missouri is among the
top 5 states for biotechnology patents.

Missouri’s thriving
bioscience hub has been a catalyst for new and existing company expansions
throughout the state. Over the past several months, several bioscience
companies have announced expansions in the Show-Me State, including KWS
in St. Louis ($13.7M investment, 75 new jobs), Jurox Pty Ltd.
in Kansas City ($741,000 investment, 13 new jobs), Monsanto
in Chesterfield ($400M investment, 675 new jobs), and the Donald Danforth Plant
Science Center in St. Louis ($45M investment, 100 new jobs).
