Locals announce plans
for downtown Cape Girardeau tech district
Earlier this week, a local investor group in Cape Girardeau announced plans to
redevelop the city’s vacant Marquette Hotel into a high-tech hub for startup technology companies. The plans also call for redevelopment of the H-H Building adjacent
to the Marquette Center into a Marriott “Courtyard” Hotel. In all, the $20
million development involves 145,000 square-feet of historic renovation in Cape
Girardeau. When complete, officials estimate that the new Marquette Tech
District will draw 200 to 300 workers and guests daily to the city’s downtown
area.
Project lead developer Jeffrey Maurer of Mayson Capital Partners in Cape Girardeau noted that the redeveloped high-tech hub would “reframe who will come downtown” by attracting more entrepreneurs. In order to further entice startups and entrepreneurs into the area, the project includes installing fiber optics and other high-speed infrastructure to make free, public Wi-Fi available throughout the downtown area.
The Marquette Tech District is anchored by the expansion of Codefi, Cape Girardeau’s first co-working space and technology incubator. Codefi will occupy three floors of the renovated Marquette Tower, making available an additional 19,000 square-feet of space to Codefi members, in addition to the 7,000 square-feet of space the incubator currently offers in the city’s Broadway Federal Building.
