Missouri Economic
Diversity Brief
According to the latest Economic Diversity Index (EDI)
analysis, Missouri had the nation’s 3rd most diverse economy in
2014, moving up one position in the rankings from the previous year.
The EDI measures economic diversity by calculating the
percentage of an industry’s GDP in comparison to the total GDP of the state. Missouri’s
top three industries (excluding government) by percentage of GDP in 2014 were
Manufacturing (12.8%), Real Estate/Rental/Leasing (11.0%), and Health
Care/Social Assistance (8.4%).

Missouri’s economic diversity shields it from the level of
recessionary impact felt by states lacking diverse economies. In the
event one or two local industries experience an economic slowdown, the state’s
diverse industries serve to buffer negative impacts on the economy as a whole.
