Show-Me Heroes Update

Michelle

The Show Me-Heroes program is under new leadership. Major Michelle Matthews accepted the director position in August 2015.

Before taking the director’s reigns, Matthews worked as a Local Veterans Employment Representative (LVER) in St. Louis at SLATE. She learned about the Show-Me Heroes program while working as a LVER. Matthews not only embraced it with passion, but also found Show-Me Heroes was an asset to veterans and employers.

When former director Lieutenant Jon Barry accepted a new position, Matthews did not hesitate to apply. She was offered the position, packed up her apartment, and moved to Jefferson City.

Since August, Matthews has worked to collaborate with LVERs, business teams and Job Center staff in order to expand and market the program while reaching all regions in the state of Missouri.

Welcome, Major Matthews!

In Their Boots: A Show-Me Heroes Story (Patriot Commercial Cleaning)

TIM SMITH

The Mission Continues initiative empowers veterans who are adjusting to life at home to find purpose through community impact, redeploying "veterans on new missions in their communities, so that their actions will inspire future generations to serve." Army veteran Tim Smith took that mission to heart, parlaying a Mission Continues Fellowship into a position as a Peer Support Counselor at the Veterans Administration. Through both of those opportunities, Smith found his calling, working with fellow veterans.

The ability to provide opportunities for veterans returning from service in Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) was the inspiration behind St. Louis-based Patriot Commercial Cleaning (PCC). According to Smith, PCC’s president, the company is committed to providing veterans and their families an opportunity to work and be a part of their community; to continue to serve but in another manner.

Inside “In Their Boots: A Show Me Heroes Story”, Smith discusses how the company was established not only to provide professional commercial cleaning services, but to show commitment to service for both clients and employees.

Flag of Freedom Award Presented to Kelley's Police & Tactical Supply

AL SMITH

Missouri Job Center—Springfield's Local Veterans Employment Representative (LVER), Al Smith, recently presented a Flag of Freedom award to Mike Kelley, owner of Kelley's Police & Tactical Supply. Since taking the Show-Me Heroes pledge, Kelley's has proven a commitment to hiring veterans. Kevin Giroux (pictured with Smith and Kelley) was referred to Kelley's by Smith and is now the company's new Operations Manager. Larry Scobee, Marketing and Sales Manager (also pictured), says Giroux has been a great asset to their company and Kelley's will continue utilizing the programs and services provided by staff at the Job Center to assist with recruitment and hiring in the future.
