How do skunks spray their stinky stuff? -Emmett, 4 years old
A skunk has two special glands on its rear-end that make a very strong-smelling chemical. There are muscles next to the glands that allow the skunk to aim and push out the liquid as far as 10 feet! They use this smelly spray to keep predators away and it doesn’t take a lot - only about half a teaspoon. Skunks don’t like to use their spray unless they have to; they don’t want to waste any. Skunks store about three teaspoons in their glands, and it takes a few days for their glands to make it. They will use their memorable coloration, stomp their feet, and hiss to warn off potential danger before they use their spray.
