Comment Online - July Conservation Area Management Plans

How are conservation areas important to you?

The Missouri Department of Conservation is in the process of updating management plans for conservation areas and invites public comments. To view management plans and share comments online, visit mdc.mo.gov/areaplans.  

The following draft conservation area management plans are available for public comment July 1-31, 2017.

Central Region

Hart Creek Conservation Area Management Plan – Hart Creek Conservation Area is 657 acres of forest, woodland, old field, savanna, glade, and lakes in Boone County adjacent to the Katy Trail. This area is managed for wildlife, forest and woodland resources, and to provide compatible recreational opportunities. There is one parking lot, 2.2 miles of multi-use (hiking and biking) trail, primitive camping area, one wooden overlook, and a 2-acre fishing lake available for public use. This comment period closes August 31, 2017.

Northeast Region

Wyaconda Crossing Conservation Area Management Plan – Wyaconda Crossing Conservation Area is 148 acres of forest, river, and old field in Lewis County. This area is managed to provide diverse habitat for fish and wildlife, while offering the public compatible outdoor recreational opportunities. 

Northwest Region

Chloe Lowry Marsh Natural Area Management Plan - Chloe Lowry Marsh Natural Area is 115 acres of old field, marsh, native prairie, and woodland in Mercer County. Management emphasis is placed on developing and maintaining habitat that supports freshwater marsh and woodland-dependent wildlife species and providing access for the public to use and enjoy. 

Grand Trace Conservation Area Management Plan – Grand Trace Conservation Area is 1,526 acres of woodland, forest, savanna, old field, and ponds in Harrison County. This area is managed with an emphasis on developing habitat that supports early-successional grassland, and open woodland wildlife species while providing compatible outdoor recreational opportunities. There are two fishable ponds and one primitive campground with four individual campsites available for public use.

Ozark Region

Sand Pond Conservation Area Management Plan – Sand Pond Conservation Area is 302 acres of bottomland forest and open field, and includes Sand Ponds Natural Area in Ripley County. This area is managed to maintain and enhance the forest natural communities associated with the unique sand dune and swale topography.

Southeast Region

Oak Ridge Conservation area Management Plan – Oak Ridge Conservation Area is 243 acres of forests, old fields, open water, and infrastructure in Stoddard County. This area is managed to protect and enhance the natural resources while providing compatible recreational opportunities. There is one primitive camping area.

Southwest Region

Coleman Memorial Conservation Area Management Plan – Coleman Memorial Conservation Area is 64 acres of forest, grassland, and pond in Laclede County. This area is managed for healthy and sustainable natural communities, and appropriate recreational opportunities. A1.8 mile gravel walking trail is available for public use.
