Record Health Insurance Sign-Ups During Open Enrollment

We closed a successful ninth open enrollment period with a record 134,257 Minnesotans signed up for 2022 private health insurance coverage. It’s a 10% increase over last year.

Over 58% of those who enrolled are receiving advanced premium tax credits, and the average tax credit per household is $6,089 a year.

A big thank you to all of the MNsure-certified assisters who helped make this happen! Our partners’ efforts and dedication to helping consumers is a vital part of this work. In fact, our broker partners helped enroll 37% of our 2022 private health plan enrollees.

Getting Started with Health Care Coverage

Understand your coverage - review your health insurance info

Recently enrolled in health insurance? Here are some tips about using and keeping your coverage.

  • Review the summary of benefits and coverage document from your insurance company to get a good overview of what your plan covers.
  • Be sure to pay your monthly premium to your health insurance company on time (even if you haven't used health care services). If you don't pay your bill every month, your coverage could be terminated.
  • Understand the out-of-pocket costs for your plan. (This can save you money!)
  • Make sure the doctors and clinics you go to are in your plan's network. Before you schedule a medical test or procedure, check if the doctors and health care facilities are in-network to avoid surprise big bills.

Read more on our website, or follow us on Twitter or Facebook for other tips.

If you have questions about your coverage, call your insurance company to get help.

Form 1095-A for 2021 Enrollees

If you or members of your family enrolled in a 2021 private health insurance plan through MNsure, we will be mailing the IRS Tax Form 1095-A to you this month. You should receive it no later than mid-February.

Form 1095-A provides information that you will need to file your 2021 taxes if advanced premium tax credits were applied to your insurance premiums or if you want to claim the premium tax credit on your 2021 tax return.

2022 Coverage Available Through Special Enrollment

You could still qualify to enroll through a special enrollment period.

When you experience big life events like getting married, having a baby or moving, you can be eligible for a special enrollment period to enroll in 2022 coverage.

Go to our website for a list of qualifying life events to learn more.

If you qualify for Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare, or are a member of a federally recognized American Indian tribe, you can enroll through MNsure at any time of the year.
