Dr. Dale Blyth Honored with Servant Leadership Award

Dale Blyth

Thank you Dale for all you do for the field of youth work!

The National Youth Leadership Council (NYLC), a nonprofit specializing in the educational approach “service-learning”, has named its 2021 award recipients this past April.

“It’s an annual opportunity to celebrate these often unsung or under-sung heroes,” says NYLC CEO Amy Meuers. “I am inspired every year by their innovations in addressing current and compelling community needs.”

Dr. Dale Blyth, professor emeritus and research consultant from the University of Minnesota, was awarded the Alec Dickson Servant Leadership Award. Dickson “impacted the lives of young people and motivated others to take up the banner of service,” through his development of Voluntary Service Overseas (a predecessor to the Peace Corps) in the 1950s, and later the Community Service Volunteers in the United Kingdom.

Blyth similarly has had profound impact on the field of youth development through his applied research and evaluation of access to and participation in non-formal learning opportunities and the use of data in policy and practice. Most recently, he served as the Associate Dean directing the Center for Youth Development at the University of Minnesota, where he has also led initiatives to advance social and emotional learning outcomes.

His academic career also includes working with the Minneapolis-based Search Institute, as well as serving as faculty at Cornell University and Ohio State University. Earlier in his career, he co-developed the Center for Adolescent Health at the American Medical Association and was a research scientist at the Boys Town Center for Youth Development.

Dr. Dale Blyth has served on the Sprockets Leadership Group and been a long time valued thought partner in moving forward our initiatives here in St. Paul!
