40th Avenue West in Duluth to reopen Friday afternoon
The first phase of a two-year project to reconstruct a portion of 40th Avenue West in Duluth is just about complete, and the street will be re-opened to traffic by Friday afternoon, October 23. The road will remain open through the winter, with the second phase of work beginning next spring.
The work completed so far focused on the area between 8th Street and the railroad tracks, along with some work outside the roadway at Members Cooperative Credit Union.
Next year's work will include the remaining roadway reconstruction along 40th Avenue West and construction of the new mini roundabout at the intersection of Grand Avenue and 40th Avenue West.
St. Louis County Public Works is partnering with the City of Duluth on this project. While the County is reconstructing the road, the City of Duluth will replace city utilities along this same section. Additional information regarding the 2027 construction schedule, traffic impacts, and detours will be provided as the next construction season approaches.
This project is needed because the pavement section and curb and gutter on 40th Ave West are at the end of their service life. Likewise, the traffic signal system at the intersection of Grand Ave and 40th Ave West is nearing the end of its service life.
Ulland Brothers is the contractor for this project. More information about the project, including an option to sign up for email updates, can be found online at 40th Ave W (CSAH 91) - Reconstruction | Engage St Louis County.
