Landon Terrance Tuomala Sentenced

Court file # 69VI-CR-24-923

On August 12, 2026, in St. Louis County District Court in Virginia, the Honorable Michelle Anderson sentenced Landon Terrance Tuomala, 24, to 120 months in prison for Attempted Second Degree Murder with Intent – Not Premeditated, announced St. Louis County Attorney Kim Maki.  The sentencing follows a stipulated evidence trial, in which Judge Anderson found Mr. Tuomala guilty after determining he did not have a mental illness defense. Over the State’s objection, Judge Anderson granted Mr. Tuomala’s request for a durational departure from the presumptive 173-month sentence set forth in the Sentencing Guidelines. In granting the request for a durational departure, Judge Anderson cited Mr. Tuomala’s physical or mental impairment, Mr. Tuomala’s lack of substantial capacity for judgement when the offense was committed, and other substantial grounds that tended to excuse or mitigate Mr. Tuomala’s culpability as reasons for the departure.

On August 26, 2024, members of the East Range Police Department were dispatched to a report of a shooting in Aurora, Minnesota. Arriving on scene, law enforcement learned that Mr. Tuomala had fired a 30-30 rifle at the victim, who had entered the residence she shared with Mr. Tuomala and another person. After entering the residence, the victim saw Mr. Tuomala point the gun at her, so she turned, ran out of the house, screamed for someone to call 911, and tripped and fell as the bullet from Mr. Tuomala’s rifle traveled over her. Later, in a Mirandized statement, Mr. Tuomala admitted that he shot at the victim and wanted to hit her.

The St. Louis County Attorney’s Office thanks the victim for her steadfast engagement and patience throughout the court process and credits the successful outcome of this matter to the thorough investigation by the East Range Police Department.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant County Attorney Amber Pederson.
