Construction begins August 24 on 40th Avenue West in Duluth
The two-year project to reconstruct a portion of 40th Avenue West in Duluth begins next Monday, Aug. 24, and with it will come a detour lasting through the end of October, when construction is expected to pause for the winter.
The work being done this year focuses on 40th Ave. W. between 8th Street and the railroad tracks, along with some work outside the roadway at Members Cooperative Credit Union.
While residents will be able to access their homes throughout, 40th Avenue West will be closed to all through traffic. Detour signs will be posted directing traffic to follow Morris Thomas Road to Stebner Road to Getchell Road to Highland Street to 57th Avenue West to Grand Avenue. Motorists are encouraged to follow the posted detour signs and allow additional travel time while construction is underway.
St. Louis County Public Works is partnering with the City of Duluth on this project, which will ultimately involve reconstruction of nearly a half mile of 40th Avenue West and construction of a new mini roundabout at the intersection with Grand Avenue. The City of Duluth will replace city utilities along 40th Ave West in conjunction with the roadway reconstruction.
This project is needed because the pavement section and curb and gutter on 40th Ave West are at the end of their service life. Likewise, the traffic signal system at the intersection of Grand Ave and 40th Ave West is nearing the end of its service life.
