St. Louis County Jail Inmate Death

At 1:10 AM on August 8, 2026, St. Louis County Correctional Officers in the Duluth jail were alerted to an inmate having a medical emergency.  Officers responded to the inmate's cell and immediately began lifesaving measures including CPR and the use of an AED.

St. Louis County Deputies also responded to the facility along with the Duluth Fire Department and Mayo Ambulance.

Although extensive lifesaving measures were performed, the inmate did not regain consciousness and was pronounced deceased. The Sheriff's office wishes to extend our condolences to the family for their loss.

At the request of the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is conducting an independent investigation to ensure transparency and avoid any potential conflict of interest. The name of the inmate is being withheld pending investigation and family notification.  Any additional requests for information should be directed to the BCA.
